Nag hits a moving target in 3.2 seconds

why they every time testing only 500m last time it will the range. why not full range(4km) test fire coze in war it is very dangerous if your target come at close to 500m.

sudhir , its difficult for missile to allign itself correctly for short distance .
In short span of time -say 3.3 secs , missile has just 1-2 secs to allign itself , which is difficult

missile will get more time for distanced target, so it can 'adjust' itself or we can say that it got time to change the path as target moves.

but at short distance, reaction time for missile is very limited.
(we can say from recent tests that Nag will hit its target in 3 seconds (half a km)if its stationary and ~3 (3.3 to be exact) sec for moving as Tanks will not able to hide its a$$ in 3 sec.)

Chances of missing target are virtually none as we know from the video available that Nag goes up in the sky and than attacks the turret part NOT travels like bullet and hit the front/back/side part of the tank.

Anathema ,
The mid-course guidance thing you want is not present in Nag . :P

Infact namica has to provide the first digital snapshot for reference
Once its launched , it is onboard seeker which guides it .
Kinetic mentioned it .
if NAMICA - can't lock , NAG can't be fired .

Situation you are talking off ,
seeker goes blind like that - No option , seeker Fails Missile is dead .
Target hides - target wont know missile is approaching bcoz plume is only for 1-2 secs during Launch .
Some security is being planned for Helina where Lock-on is achieved after firing (LOAL) with mid-phase guidance and back-link . But all this only till Mid-phase .
For the terminal phase , it has in-built guidance to allign itself to attack top of the tank .
Yeah but we can add one extra capability as I mentioned earlier, if the 1st Namica (launching the missile) can't get the direct snapshot of the target than another NAMICA (2nd) or UAV can do it for 1st, making a proper picture of the target for the Nag to be launched and seek towards the target.

Kinetic - what is actually that FPA , is it meant to replace CCD/Cmos imager ? ?
mmW + FPA if actually are onboard /tested , NAG would be an hell of quantum jump .

FPA is different from CCD/CMOS but like them another imaging technology. Its highly sensitive to IR, so usually used for IR guided missile. Its very high tech system, needs advanced technologies to develop and productionise. DRDO developed it fully in India itself.

As you know DRDO also working on mmw guidance for Nag. But dual (mmw+FPA) guidance project is yet to be started I guess. Its a next generation technology. Only US have mastered it. Israel might have got it from US. Don't know about Russian development.

Sudhir ,

Just to add on to what everyone else is saying....

Army has already tested NAG for long ranges....what remains is the short range testing (500 m). They are in the process of doing this testing , and hence you are seeing reports of NAG successes at 500 m.

Hope this helps !!!

its one of the best works of DRDO....superb missile with latest technology...took time but came out as best....lot of export potentials as well..congrats DRDO !!

I dont agree with you.

Starting 2010, coming atleast 50 years will be DRDO's years.

period of 2014-20 will be very good for indian defence !!!!!!! as

1- tejas mk2 foc
2-arjun mk2
3-akashmk2
4-ins vikramaditiya
5- iac1 and 1ac2
6-fgfa (maybe)
7-brahmos2 , air launched (operational)
8- shaurya (,,)
9-su 30 mki mlu
10- mmrca

i seriously hope they get it all in this timeperiod ....

correct me if i am wrong ...........

Except for iac1 and iac2 ....rest everything seems feasible...Jai Hind!!

Well guys i am a big fan of Defence and particularly of Indian but have zero technical knowledge of the products. To make things simple can any specialists like Lt.Prateek or Kinetic or someone tell me where this missile stands in the global perspective and is it completely developed??
