Relief camps set up in Lahore for Swat affectees

LAHORE: Various political and trade organizations have set up relief camps in different parties of the provincial capital on Tuesday to collect aid for the displaced civilians of Swat.

Camps have been set up at Iqbal Town, Mall Road, Allama Iqbal Town, Johar Town and other parts of the city where organizers are appealing to the citizens to help the affected families of Swat.

On the other hand, the provincial government has called on non-government organizations (NGOs) and philanthropists to provide food items and other items for their brother countrymen at the DCO office and other centres.

my father just got off the phone and he sed that some the internally displaced refuse assistance saying others need it more give it to them which is amazing to see the selfless sacrifice of these people but the people of mardan and swabi have opened their houses and hearts to these people they are being helped by all pakistanis all over pakistan and the world and InshAllah when we hear of swat we will again think of it as our heaven on earth a gift from Allah

yes u rit. ppl of mardan, swabi and some other towns in NWFP have crossed all limits when it comes to helping mahajirens. such ppl are definately the blessed ones. they are reminding me of time when muslims migrated from Makkah sharef to Madina sharef.
every single pakistani must contribute and must stand up with these ppl in this testing time. May God be with us.

Work starts for supply of electricity to IDPs camps
ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): On special directive of Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, the Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Tuesday issued orders for immediate provision of electricity in the camps of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of Swat and Buner.

The Minister directed the concerned officials to install transformers in all the camps and supply electricity free of cost there.

The entire nation stands side by side with the affected people in this difficult time, he added.

He said all the possible measures will be adopted for the provision of basic facilities.

Pervaiz Ashraf said the facility of electricity will also be provided to affected people as early as possible adding, the concerned authorities have been directed to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to the camps.

He, however, said that the duration of loadshedding if required, will be very short.

The concerned officials have immediately started work to implement directive of the Federal Minister.

Rs 3 mln cheques distributed among 600 displaced families
SWABI, May 12 (APP): Federal Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education Samina Khalid Ghurki Tuesday visited Swabi relief camp in NWFP and distributed cheques of financial assistance worth Rs 5,000 each among the 600 internally displaced families of Swat, Buner and Dir Lower.

She reviewed the facilities being provided at the camp and said the government was making all-out efforts to provide relief to the affected people.

Later talking to media, she said the officials of National Bank of Pakistan would visit each relief camp of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to cash cheques for payment to IDPs.

She said the government would continue providing all kind of assistance to IDPs and bear all their expenses till their complete rehabilitation.

Ghurki said Pakistan Baitul Mall (PBM) was providing food stuff to IDPs, while ministers were regularly visiting the relief camps to take care of their needs.

Lauding the support extended by the people for IDPs, she said the entire nation shared their sufferings and was providing assistance to them wholeheartedly in this hour of trial.

The minister said that President Asif Ali Zardari had directed the concerned quarters to resolve problems of IDPs on priority basis.

Later, Samina Khalid Ghurki also visited the Mardan relief camp.

Speaking on the occasion, Managing Director PBM Zumurd Khan said PBM would announce a ‘family package’ within a couple of days for IDPs, covering all their needs.

The programme will be inaugurated by the Minister for Social Welfare Samina Khalid Ghurki, he said.

He said PBM had been providing food twice a day to IDPs since their arrival in the camps.

He said under the ‘langer’ project, the PBM had provided food to around 20,000 persons in Swabi for the last couple of days.

Food is also being provided to displaced persons in all the camps set up in different of areas of NWFP, he added.

Special Support Group for IDPs formed: DG ISPR
ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): Director General ISPR Major General Athar Abbas on Tuesday said that a Corps Headquarter has been designated as Special Support Group for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to provide support to provincial government efforts. Addressing a media briefing here at PID, Major Gen. Athar said the newly formed Group would be headed by Corps Commander Mangla, Lt. General Nadeem Ahmed, who has a vast experience as he held position as Deputy Chairman Earthquake Relief and Rehabilitation Authority for a long time.

He said the Group has been assigned the portfolio to look after logistics,health, administration and assist in registration.

The Group will have four interfaces including, with military, Civil government, agencies and departments, donors and international human organizations and communities through elected representation.

He said that Army has started establishing hospitals at IDPs camps. Immediately, two field hospitals with 30 male and female doctors have been deputed to provide medical assistance.
