What's new

My boyfriend told me he comes from a small town in China, so I went there and..

You are clueless to reality and would be a bad urban planner.

There are now only 10 US cities left with a population of greater than 1 million people and all of them have subways. There are 160 in China. Why don’t all 160 of those Chinese cities have subway systems?? Why are you so far behind in infrastructure?

We have cities with less than a million people with subways. How come most of your less than 1 million population cities don’t have subways? What kind of a crappy government do you have? The likely answer is it is not practical in terms of revenue generation. So why are you thinking it would be practical for us then??

You keep talking nonsense over and over.

Although I don't think the number of subways can explain too much. However, by June 2022, 48 cities in China have subways. Eleven cities in the USA have subways. Why do you think there are more subways in America than in China?

China's population density is much higher than that of the USA. Moreover, considering food security, China needs to reserve enough agricultural land.

So it is unreasonable for Chinese people to live in the suburbs like Americans.

I can certainly comprehend that but apparently the Chinese members of PDF can’t comprehend the opposite situation in the US. We don’t have a land issue in the US so we have no reason to be packed into cities.

Back before the days of modern farming and refrigeration we were packed into big cities like New York and Chicago over 100 years ago. The land outside the cities was clearcutted and used for agriculture since most food back then had to be sourced locally.

However when refrigeration was perfected the need to source food locally was upended. Food production was moved to the best growing areas and shipped by refrigerated rail around the country.

The previously clearcutted farm areas became the location for new development and people moved from cities to these suburban areas finally realizing the American Dream of a “single family home with a white picket fence, 2.5 kids and a dog”.

Unfortunately those who couldn’t afford it were left in the cities and now most cities have a median income far less than those in the suburbs. City budgets became a disaster because the people living there can’t support the infrastructure built for the previous generations of well paid workers. The subways are failing apart because the ridership can’t support the budget needs. Etc.

Although I don't think the number of subways can explain too much. However, by June 2022, 48 cities in China have subways. Eleven cities in the USA have subways. Why do you think there are more subways in America than in China?

I’m not saying that. I’m saying why should we be obsessed with building subways if the majority of our population doesn’t even live in cities.

Plus the cities are losing their higher income workers to the suburbs so the people left to use the subways likely won’t be able to afford the upkeep.

It’s getting so bad that the city of Boston can’t raise the subway rates to help offset the costs because that will chase low income (currently 30% of subway users) ridership away…who are the people the subway should be helping in the first place.

Again your post shows you are completely clueless in understanding what I am talking about. At least @MH.Yang seems to understand that China and the US have two opposite variables affecting how our citizens can live.

You are always trying to shoehorn the US into the Chinese situation of needing big cities. You don’t realize that is the opposite of what we want. I don’t understand why you guys can easily figure out that the US’s suburbanization wouldn’t work in China but you can’t figure out the opposite situation of China big cities not working in the US. Why do you always hit a brick wall in understanding it??

Many American people said otherwise after they first hand experienced who developed China's public transport is, you are guy wearing your blinders for too long, did you every try Chinese public transport? I tried US', both subways and railways.

Even Tibet has bullet trains, Do US cities have less population than remote Tibet small towns?

How do you explain rats and trash in US subways? also American culture and people just like to live with? In Beijing I won't see a single rat for years, In New York I averagely saw 10 of them every day and Americans here don't see their cities have infras disrepair problems.

I just explained it a few posts ago about how cities are now lopsided with a higher percentage of lower income people due to those with higher incomes moving to the suburbs. City budgets are now strained due to the increase in social services spending. Many subways run at a deficit because they can’t raise their rates to cover their costs due to alienating the high percentage of lower income people who use them.

You mean it's prefect ok for US to let their cities decay since every decent person is moving out and US is giving up on all their cities?

Again you are completely clueless about the US.

The median home price in the US is much higher than it was in China when you basically eminent domained huge swaths of land to build your rail systems. We aren’t a country of poor farmers who can be offered some simple apartment in exchange for taking the property generations of their family have lived on. It would cost $trillions to buyout people at such a scale.

Can you imagine how much it would cost to tear down a swath right through the middle
of present day Beijing because your government realized they actually needed a new line. The amount of compensation would be enormous and the people in present day Beijing aren’t poor farmers either who aren’t going to settle for some new apartment in an outer ring.

You mean it's prefect ok for US to let their cities decay since every decent person is moving out and US is giving up on all their cities?

Well what are you doing with all the 1000’s of villages in the countryside which have lost population of their most successful people to the cities? Are you going to kick the remaining out and tear all the buildings down?

We have the same problem but in the opposite direction.

UK has built railways over 200 years ago and they are still running today

Chinese railways only built 2 years ago

lets see how Chinese railways do in 20 years time

the Chinese railways in Africa are already falling apart

you know why? because its "Made in China"

Falling apart in your crack drug head only. China has been building railways for more than 100 years, not your BS of only 2 years.
