China bans Muslim names for babies in Xinjiang
Beijing | Updated: Apr 25 2017 2:18PM

China has banned Islamic names for babies in Muslim-majority Xinjiang region, home to the Muslim Uighur ethnic minority, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Tuesday.
According to the move, children with the banned names like Saddam or Midina will not be able to get a residence permit called "hukou", which is required for access to medical and educational services, it said in a statement.
"This is just the latest in a slew of new regulations restricting religious freedom in the name of countering religious extremism," the HRW said.
The Xinjiang government claims the names were banned because of their religious connotation, which can "exaggerate religious fervour", Efe news reported.
On April 1, the authorities in Xinjiang had also imposed new rules banning "abnormal" beards or a full veil and warned people of punishments for refusing to watch state TV or radio programmes.
Conflicts between the Uighur and the Han, the majority ethnic group in China and who also control the government, are common.
Beijing usually attributes the violence to Islamist groups and secessionists whereas Uighur groups in exile consider the conflict to be a result of repression by the Communist regime.
"Violent incidents and ethnic tensions in Xinjiang have been on the rise in recent years, but the government's farcically repressive policies and punishments are hardly solutions," said HRW.
"They are only going to deepen resentment among the Uighurs," it added.

Look like someone want to misguide people's mindset.
There are Hui muslims around me in China. Never heard about anyone talking about how they have to be named.
The western medias always propaganda one side of an event just like they did in something in ME.
As for Uighur, there were nobody wearing veil or beards in Xinjiang province 20 years ago when I was a child.

I do not know since when some Uighur people started to pursue that fashion .
Those who are not used to these new fashions would always be threatened by some mysterious persons who you have no idea where they come from.

The unique culture of Uighur ethnic in terms of dress and dance is missing step by step, that following is they dress and act more and more like Arabian people.
Besides Uighur, some mysterious persons are trying to make other muslims act as they asked, which is very ridiculous.
So there is a mysterious strength which has been forcing muslims in Xinjiang to act as they asked.
Can you image a Hui Chinese who is actually a Han muslim have to dress or act like an Abrabian people?

You people have no idea about what's the real situation in Xinjiang province.
The extremists want to make all the muslims behave as they wish.

People should think of these things in another perspective.
There is another Ningxia autonomous region with a majority of Hui ethnic and some small muslim autonomous counties in China.
Why always Xinjiang? Why always Uighur?
Why not other muslim ethnics?
Does anybody think about it?

The extremism has been spreading for a while in Xinjiang, which must be eliminated as soon as possible.
In a word, China government would do anything to prevent Xinjiang from being a bloody hell as in Middle East.
In the end, the Uighur ethnic would live in a secular and modern society as a normal citizen as other muslim ethnics.

The Chinese government has banned dozens of Muslim baby names in the Muslim-majority Xinjiang province, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported.

Names such as Islam, Quran, Mecca, Jihad, Imam, Saddam, Hajj, and Medina have been banned, RFA said, citing a Chinese Communist Party document titled 'Naming Rules for Ethnic Minorities'.

"[People with banned names] won't be able to get a household registration," a police official from Urumqi, Xinjiang, was quoted as saying.

Home to Uighur Muslims, Xinjiang has been at the center of the Chinese government's drive to combat 'extremism'.

Various rights groups have blamed the ruling Chinese Communist Party for infringing upon its population's right to religious freedom; however, the Chinese government has rejected allegations of abuse.

Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the exiled World Uyghur Congress group, while speaking to RFA, said the Chinese government is continuing to suppress traditional Uyghur culture by controlling what Uyghurs can call their children.

"In setting limits on the naming of Uyghurs, the Chinese government is in fact engaging in political persecution under another guise," he said, adding; "They are afraid that people with such names will become alienated from Chinese policies in the region."

The move to ban certain 'over-the-top' Muslim names in Xinjiang is being seen as a consequence of China's top legislative body announcing a set of 50 regulations to combat extremism last month.

It was reported earlier this month that restrictions on Xinjiang's Muslims had expanded to include a prohibition on wearing veils in public places and refusal to watch state television.

In a press release issued by the Chinese director of Human Rights Watch (HRW), Sophie Richardson criticised the government's crackdown on Xinjiang's Muslims, stating that "the government’s farcically repressive policies and punishments are hardly solutions. Instead, they are only going to deepen resentment among Uyghurs.”

“If the government is serious about bringing stability and harmony to the region as it claims, it should roll back — not double down on — repressive policies,” she said.

China bans ‘extreme’ Muslim baby names in Xinjiang – reports
Chinese authorities have banned Muslim baby names it considers to be “extremist” among the Uyghur ethnic group in the far-western province of Xinjiang, Taiwanese and US media have reported.

Names with religious overtones – such as Jihad, Imam and Medina – were among the 29 reportedly listed as banned in the newly-introduced “Naming Rules For Ethnic Minorities.”

"NICE TRY, OP"

How is Imam and Medina "extremist" :woot:

.
Medina is a holy place. Even calling Medina extremist is anti-Islam. How can it be extremist? Imam is neither extremist name, it means leader. Jihad means holy war. Not some terror attack.:hitwall: But nobody in my place name kids Jihad.
If this happens in India. We are going war with the government.

Meanwhile in India, a person names his Child. 'TIMUR' And he is still living here. Acting in movies.

Any name which would cause a war, if banned, is probably extremist.

Actually , even in Muslim countries most people don't name their children with names of Cities , normally don't

>Quran, Mecca, Jihad, Imam, Hajj, and Medina, Islam, as these are more or less associated with religious duties, cities or pillars. Muslims don't even call their Kid Quran , just like Christians don't call their son Bible :pop:. Islam / Imam hmm I heard some folks use it as name but 99% not common

Now the name Saddam, not even very popular to my understanding no problem with Mr Saddam

Jihad is a piller of Islam , not a name of person, its a Verb (Action Verb) not used as name
Imam , is literally means Leader , not commonly used as a name

No such thing as Mecca Khan or Medina Bhutto

The Anglo-Zionist Empire/New World Order is trying to support and justify its balkanisation efforts in China, as well as to try to drive a wedge between Pakistan and China through its hordes of presstitutes. And grass is green.

It is because some mysterious strength force the muslims in Xinjiang province how to name and how to dress and how to makeup in recent years.
If people do not do that, they may risk being chopped.
For a counter attack, China government ban something as the same as the mysterious strength force people to do.
When the extremism is over in Xinjiang, everything would go back to original track .
That is it .

Imam , is literally means Leader , not commonly used as a name. Generally a "title" awarded by community to lead and is not necessarily a name

No such thing as Mecca Khan or Medina Bhutto or Quran Niazi or Hajj Zardari
