Muslims are harassed in name of terror: PM

NEW DELHI: Acknowledging that Muslim youth are sometimes harassed in the "name of terrorists", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday night asked
security forces to observe "zero tolerance" for fundamental human rights violations while dealing with such cases.

Interacting with a group of senior Urdu journalists here, he said the entire community could not be suspected of being terrorists and that being a Sikh, he understands the concerns of Muslims.

He suggested that committees, comprising respected Muslims, should be set up in states to look into any case of harassment of innocent members of the community.

"Mai manta hun ki hindustan ke musalmanon ko kaafi mushkilat ka samna karna padta hai, kuch samay terrorist ke naam par Muslim navjawanon ko pareshan bi kiya jata hai (I agree that Indian Muslims face a lot of difficulties, sometimes in the name of terrorists, Muslim youth are harassed)," Singh said.

Underlining that he "understands" the problems faced by the minority community, the Prime Minister said his message to security forces, whether in Jammu and Kashmir or elsewhere, is zero tolerance for fundamental human rights violations."

Finally a Sikh has spoken out for the cause of Indian Muslims. Jarnail has changed the entire equation.

I hope he wins again. Not just because he is Sikh but because no one and no one can question his honesty. His reletives live in Amritsar and when he went back to see them he said, "I studied hard in candle light and I achieved something and dont expect anything from me just because I am PM. You gonna have to work hard and achieve something by your self".

I strongly believe only a Sikh can be such honest person. I wish him all the best for this LS election.

Yes I know comrade. And that is why Bengal is Bengal. That is why there is no communal riot in Bengal. Bengal is also famous for Sotturer Dashok and the coffee house. Remember Manna Dey? But Bengal must retain its leftist identity at any cost. :smokin:

PM doing his duty of reassuring all Indians that justice is a concern of the govt.

Police reform, ability of poor people to get justice and decent treatment from police is not just a muslim cause, its india's cause. india can never realise its dream of becoming a developed liberal democracy unless these issues are resolved.

The Nuke Deal made the split. All left parties welcomed the Polit Bureau decision. The Mamatadi icon worship trend is exploiting the Nandigram and Singur issues. TMC is there because of CPIM. But you can see what type of people join TMC. I do not support Congress, but Congress is better option than Hindutva BJP forces. At least, Congress does not demolish Mosques and Gurduwaras.

I would have resigned if nuke deal had fallen through: PM

NEW DELHI: "I was very clear that if the nuclear deal had not gone through, I would have resigned as prime minister," said Manmohan Singh, for the
first time acknowledging that the deal, which almost brought his government to its knees, was a matter of such importance to him.

Elaborating on the nuclear deal, Singh said his toughest moment was getting the deal through government and Parliament, and his moment of greatest satisfaction too was getting the deal through. "It was a question of India's honour. We had negotiated this deal for three years with the US. If I was not successful in getting the deal through Parliament, we would be sending out the signal to the world that the Indian political system could not be trusted. If I could not see this through, I was not going to remain prime minister."

The assertion came amid a fast-escalating war of rhetoric with the BJP, with the Congress's principal challenger repeatedly taunting the PM as indecisive.

Talking about the UPA's achievements and laying out his future agenda for the Congress party, a combative prime minister opened up to the Capital's women journalists on Friday. In a way, the interaction with journalists, first of a series planned over the next few weeks, marked the start of Singh, the politician's election campaign. Not for him the heat and dust of political rallies, but conversations on economics, politics and national vision that can be projected out over a much larger, largely urban audience.

Strangely, while Singh staked his government and personal reputation for a nuclear agreement with the US that created the biggest political storm in the UPA government and provoked the Left parties into severing ties with the UPA, the Congress campaign has chosen not to highlight the deal.

On October 12, 2007, Singh had told a similar audience in the Capital that the death of the nuclear deal wasn't that big a deal. But by the time the issue had come to a head by the summer of 2008, Singh let it be known that it was either the deal or him.

provided that the third party cannot form a govt of their own,it would have been wise to be with the congress for the time being.....and after the elections force more of your men into the govt......btw the congress said they would rebuild the mosque in their manifesto i guess, what do you think,is this empty talks pre-election or a true promise??? I doubt the hindutva parties will ever let this happen....

That issue will get stalled again and then all parties will blame the courts for holding things up.
