Those people happen to be the girl's family members. They were obviously concerned with safety and well being of the child, wouldn't you be?

Did the man deserve to be killed? Definitely not, he should have been handed to the police and let the law take its course, but sometimes things can and do get out of hand, especially when the life of a minor is at stake.
