Musharraf to visit China despite ouster rumors

Wed Aug 6, 2008

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday decided to visit the Beijing Olympic Games despite media reports that the ruling coalition has agreed on steps to remove him.

The leaders of Pakistan's main ruling parties met for a second day in Islamabad Wednesday to resolve differences over how to restore dozens of judges fired by Musharraf last year and to consider the unpopular president's fate.

Pakistani newspapers, citing unnamed sources, reported that Asif Ali Zardari, head of the largest coalition party, and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who heads the second-biggest party, reached a consensus Tuesday on steps to oust Musharraf.

Dawn daily said they had agreed to formally request that Musharraf step down and would impeach him through parliamentary measures "if he did not oblige."

Party officials declined to comment on the reports. After hours of talks Wednesday at Zardari's Islamabad residence, Sharif left to consult with members of his party. He returned to Zardari's later and their meeting continued late into the evening, said Farhatullah Babar, a spokesman for Zardari's party. Details were not available.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who heads the main pro-Musharraf party, claimed Wednesday the coalition lacked the two-thirds majority of lawmakers in Parliament to impeach the president.

The Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday morning that Musharraf's trip had been canceled. In the evening, it issued another statement saying it was on again.

"In view of our special relations with China, the President (Musharraf) has decided to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics," the ministry said.

Musharraf, who was originally scheduled to leave Wednesday, will travel to China Thursday.

It was not clear why the former army strongman changed his mind. The initial announcement fueled speculation he did not want to leave Pakistan when the coalition was discussing his ouster.

Musharraf, who ousted Sharif in a bloodless coup and then dominated Pakistan for eight years, was sidelined when Zardari and Sharif formed a coalition government after trouncing the former general's allies in elections this February.

But it has been a troubled alliance. Sharif pulled his ministers from the Cabinet in May after Zardari — seemingly leery of confrontation with the U.S.-backed president — stalled on restoring the judges. The former premier has also been more hawkish than Zardari in demanding the ouster of Musharraf.

While both party leaders say they want to sustain the coalition, their standoff has hampered the functioning of the government amid mounting public frustration at spiraling food and fuel prices and growing Islamic militancy.

Musharraf has in recent weeks made more public appearances and comments — seen by some in Pakistan as an attempt to show he remains a political force despite ceding control of the army and having little say in the day-to-day running of the country.

The president retains the constitutional power to dissolve Parliament. Given Musharraf's continuing unpopularity, to exercise that power would be highly controversial — particularly if it were seen as a bid for his own political survival.

Although I'm hoping for another coup Kiyani wouldn't go behind Musharraf's back.
Even Musharraf wouldn't resist if Kiyani took control.

Amna Ji, please refrain to post oneliners.
Its in poor taste anyway. :tsk:

I think he hashad another good look at what options aree available and what his response would be. aving founfd the situation to be satisfactory, he has decided to proceed ahead as planned.
I am amazed at the stupidity of these politicians. Ther are major problems facinfg the country and instead of taking steps to alleviate the misery of the people, they are after Musharaf who by all accounts is not holding any tangible power.
I dread to think how Pakistan will fare under these stupid morons.

Musharraf consults allies, legal aides over options

* President talks to Shujaat, Elahi, AG, Sindh governor, Chattha
* Says he will defend himself if impeachment proceedings initiated
* Chaudhrys say ruling coalition lacks required strength

By Sajjad Malik and Irfan Ghauri

RAWALPINDI: President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday discussed with his political allies and legal aides his options to counter a possible move by the ruling coalition to oust him from office.

Sources privy to the developments told Daily Times that Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussian and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi called on the president and assured him of support in case he was impeached, the sources said. They said the president appeared confident and said he would defend himself. Musharraf urged the PML leaders to solicit support for him in parliament. The Chaudhrys assured the president that the coalition would fail to muster the required strength of legislators in the Senate and National Assembly for the impeachment. The sources said that they also advised the president to go on with his planned visit to China to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Sources said the president also met Attorney General Malik Qayyum and Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad, and talked to PML-Q leader Hamid Nasir Chattha on the phone. Chattha and president had met on Tuesday.

The sources said Musharraf also met Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani, but the ISPR director general did not confirm the meeting. Asked if the meeting took place, he said: “not to my knowledge”.

Corps commanders meeting is also due I think today. Lets wait and see what happens. Personally I doubt army shall intervene due to prevailing situation in the country.

Ejaz,

I think Army will definitely not intervene and if it does it would be on the part of Musharraf. After the ISI episode, there are some serious misgivings on the part of the security establishment about the PPP leadership. On top of this, there are some other concerns with regards to external influences on some of the civilian leaders.

Currently, Pakistan is under serious external pressure. If anything I suspect the ones who matter will do a Gen Waheed Kakar here by telling the government and the pain in the *** PML-N leadership to take it easy and not push things too hard.

News people saying that Musharraf might use the 52B option (whatever the number is). This will result in the kicking of the existing government and it will take months until Supreme Court decides what to do next.

I just hope Zardari is not such an idiot to go out an impeach him. Because he is likely to be failed.

Think of the mileage he or Nawaz get if they fail or are made to fail.

The president is also expected to hold bilateral talks during the visit with the Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Chairman of National Peopleís Council Wu Bungguo. The president is also likely to meet leaders of Russia, Australia, France and Italy on the sidelines of the Olympics.

:) he canceld the trip first when smell a coup by Zardari and co against him.

But the idiot when end up at continuing bickering over powers, Musharraf knew it was it he decided to go to China

One more thing earlier Zardari said he would visit China to represent Pakistan but he canceld at the eleventh hour just to add to his tries to tarnish Pak-China relations.

Musharraf sensing the sensitivity of the matter decided to visit china to streanthen ties also.
:)

Jana,

Zardari's going or not going to China will not matter. He has no official capacity aside from being the leader of a political Party...Chinese can only give him courtesy protocol (and not protocol reserved for state guests as would be given to Musharraf or Gilani) and nothing else on his visit to China. This is part of Zardari's problem. He decided to go to the US and then the Americans told him that protocol would only be given to Gilani and he backtracked.

He is not wanted outside. His relevance is only inside of Pakistan and that too may be for a limited amount of time if he keeps on pushing his luck.
