Musharraf planning another Kargil? Pakistan secretly constructing bunkers and strengthening its defense positions
Jun. 10, 2007
Making optimum use of the cease-fire which is in place all along the Line of Control and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir since November 2003, Pakistan is constructing bunkers and strengthening its defence positions in the violence-hit state which is faced with proxy war from across the border for the past 17 years.
Though few reports suggested that Pakistan has built over 200 concrete bunkers and embankments close to the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, the highly placed defence sources told the media that though no authentic data could be made available regarding Pak constructions on the border, since November 2003 when the ceasefire was declared on the 740-km Line of Control and the 191-km International Border with Pakistan, the other side has been consolidating its defences. The process is still on, with Pakistan replacing its mud bunkers all along the LoC and the IB with fortified, concrete RCC bunkers. Trips along the LoC in Uri and Baramulla and the International Border in Jammu provide a clear view of the construction activity across the border. Though the security agencies manning the border are tight lipped about these developments but they are willing to speak on condition of anonymity. There is no denying the fact that Pakistan is strengthening its defences. We have been watching their activities since 2003 and reported these developments up the chain of command but, sadly, there has been no response, said the top defence officials confirming the concretisation of bunkers and other defence-related activities in the region.
