Mullah Omer removed from FBI most wanted list

Yes, I am sure USA will earn lots of lesson from this war.

Pakistan has a landlocked grip on Afghanistan's future; I am sure it can control the aftermath of the US departure to its own liking.

I don't think the complete Afghanistan (geographically) can be controlled, if no peace comes then its back to the old Taliban vs Northern Alliance.

I think all Pakistan would need to control are the few hundred miles adjacent to the Duran Line to serve the purpose it has in mind, not the whole of Afghanistan.

Pakistan already has problems with Wazirastan. I doubt they can control a couple of hundreds of miles deep into Afghanistan with the terrain and distance.

.
I think the famous urdu proverb...

100 sunar ke or aik lohar ke fits well here..!

US and Alliance is the sunar and Pakistan is the lohar!~

The problem in Waziristan is instigated by USA and NATO due to their inability in controlling the porus border..

Mullah Omar was never on FBI list
From the Newspaper | Back Page | (2 hours ago) Today
WASHINGTON: The US capital was abuzz with claims and counter-claims since Tuesday morning that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has removed the name of Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar from its list of ‘most wanted terrorists’.

The report, attributed to unidentified officials but not backed by reliable sources, claimed that the US decision to remove his name from the list reflected Washington`s desire to improve ties with the Taliban insurgents.

Last week, US officials confirmed that they had held talks recently with Taliban representatives in Qatar and Germany.

The US also supported a move to open a Taliban political office in Qatar, which will serve as an outpost for the outlawed insurgent movement.

Mullah Omar, the founder of the Taliban movement, has been in hiding since the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan toppled his regime.

US officials earlier claimed that he was one of the original planners of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

The US invaded Afghanistan to end the Taliban rule because of its alleged link to Al Qaeda, whose chief Osama bin Laden masterminded the 9/11 attacks. Bin Laden was killed in a US raid on his compound in Abbottabad on May 2.

Since last month, however, US officials have begun dis-tancing the Taliban from Al Qaeda, saying that they invaded Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda extremists and not the Taliban.

Although the claim that Mullah Omar has been removed from FBI`s most wanted list has not been denied by US officials, a respectable US news magazine, The Atlantic, pointed out in a post on its site that the Taliban leader was never on this list.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson, when asked to comment on the claimed, confirmed to various US media outlets that Mullah Omar was never on the list.

But he stays on a State Department list of foreign terrorists, which also offers cash reward for his capture.

FBI says Mullah Omar never figured in its most wanted list
Washington/Islamabad, Dec 28 (PTI)
Afghan-Taliban's secretive head Mullah Omar's name as been ''quietly removed" from the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists, Pakistani media has claimed, prompting the US investigative agency to clarify that he had never figured in its list.
Mullah Omar, who ruled Afghanistan during the Taliban regime in mid-90s, was never on the FBI's most wanted list but continued to be on a list of the State Department, which has declared "up to USD 10 million" on his head.

"So there is no question of him being removed from our list," said a spokesman for FBI, which maintains a list of most wanted terrorists responsible for attacks inside the US.
His remarks came when asked about news reports appearing in Pakistani media that one-eyed Mullah Omar's name has been quietly removed from the most wanted terrorist list of the US.

Amid claims and counter-claims about Mullah Omar's name in the FBI list, The Express Tribune newspaper, which originally reported about the removal of his name from the FBI list, has pulled the story from its website.

According to 'The Atlantic' magazine, "the story originated in the Pakistani media with reports like the one from Pakistan-based (and The New York Times-owned) The Express Tribune, where we first heard the news."

It also noted that The Express Tribune has "unceremoniously" pulled its story from its website.

Speculation was earlier rife about Mullah Omar's removal from the list given that the US was reportedly holding talks with the Taliban.

While FBI clarified that he never figured in its list, Mullah Omar continued to be on the State department's Reward for Justice (RFJ) programme list. Under the RFJ programme, the State Department has declared an award of USD 10 million to anyone who provides information leading to the capture or death of Mullah Omar, believed to be in his early 50s.

"Mullah Omar's status in the RFJ (Reward for Justice) Programme remains unchanged," a State Department official told PTI when asked about news reports.

According to latest information posted on the Rewards For Justice website, Mullah Omar's Taliban regime in Afghanistan sheltered Osama bin-Laden and his al-Qaeda network in the years prior to the September 11 attacks.

"Although Operation Enduring Freedom removed the Taliban regime from power, Mullah Omar remains at large and represents a continuing threat to America and her allies," it said.

Most of the guys are on FBI most wanted except Mullah Omer.... the guy who refused to handover America's most wanted man... is not on FBI list..........how ironic :P

.
Looks like some overzealous Pakistani reporter screwed the pooch on this one.. Mullah Omar continues to be on USA's most wanted list with a $10 million bounty on his head.. He is probably not of FBI's

People who are posting the links to the FBI site, should also read the footnote in that site..

"The alleged terrorists on this list have been indicted by sitting Federal Grand Juries in various jurisdictions in the United States for the crimes reflected on their wanted posters. "

A possible reason could be that Mullah Omar has not been indicted by a jury for a crime committed in USA.. However, state department has him listed as a wanted terrorist with an award of 10 million $ on his head..

Dont know if he was ever listed on FBI list .. Any back dated snapshot would be a good idea if someone has one...

Pakistan already has problems with Wazirastan. I doubt they can control a couple of hundreds of miles deep into Afghanistan with the terrain and distance.

Pakistan has serious law and order issues throughout its territory, not just Waziristan, that will likely grow worse; however, it still does not stop the leadership of dreaming of projecting their control to their west.

A lot of law and order issues in Pakistan are directly related to the current war on terror, most likely things will cool down if some political settlement is reached in Afghanistan.

Pakistani ambitions should definitely exist but in terms of having a stable and beneficial relationship with Afghanistan.
We are the major trade route for Afghans and have a lot of shared heritage so I think we are not out of options regarding a friendly regime in Afghanistan, which is our only concern here.

Pakistan and Afghanistan certainly have a complicated history.
We also need to recall the hostility that Afghan government had towards Pakistan in pre Soviet invasion era and attempts to destabilize Pakistan's tribal areas. There is a reason why Pakistan is concerned about what happens in Afghanistan.

Mistakes certainly have been made but after this decade of bloodshed and unprecedented chaos, i think there is a desire to just try to move on in a positive direction.
However deliberate attempts to make a scapegoat out of Pakistan need to be checked, they are very counterproductive.
