PARIS: Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar is based in Pakistan and everyone knows it, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Tuesday, calling on Islamabad to do more to help end the conflict.

“It's not a secret for anyone, everyone knows that Mullah Omar is in Quetta, if he's not now in Karachi,” Kouchner told French lawmakers, referring to two major Pakistani cities known to harbour militant cells.

Mullah Omar was the leader of the Taliban regime that was overthrown in Afghanistan by US-led forces in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks and is now thought to be based in Quetta.

“Taliban leaders have been given shelter in Pakistan. I'm not revealing anything,” Kouchner said, telling parliament's foreign relations committee why Afghanistan has called on Pakistan to help negotiate a peace deal. -AFP

The Europeans have gona nanners over crisis one after another and resorting to cheap tactics for keeping public attention diverted.

The biggest problem with these allegations is that not an iota of evidence is produced to support these. It seems to me that Pakistan has become the scapegoat in all this as US led NATO forces are failing to meet the ever increasing challenges in Afghanistan.

The amount of intelligence and security personnel presence is far too great in the mentioned cities and Pakistan in general. It is thus highly unlikely that these people could be hiding in these cities. During the soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the insurgents leadership lived in Pakistan and that was no secret. They were seen and reported by many to be in the area, on the other hand, Mullah Omar is an exclusive figure who could be present in Afghanistan or the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Though Mullah Badabar was caught in Karachi, his presence was known to many and led to his arrest. MQM would not tolerate extremists in their areas, that is given. Quetta might have people willing to help facilitate terrorists but intelligence men roam the city on lookout for these people.

With floods, a ravaged economy and political tussles, Pakistan is in no state to be playing such espionage games that would offer no benefit to us. This what superpowers do, Pakistan cannot play the world for a fool in this manner. If it could do so then it would have not been suffering from so many disasters.

Another thing I want to mention is that, Mullah Omar would not matter one bit if his group was defeated. If the Taliban was ousted from their areas and defeated, their leadership would have no power or resources to dent their enemies.
