Mutual compulsions brought PML-N and MQM together


ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) isn’t in a hurry in joining the federal government despite its decision to support government’s presidential candidate Mamnoon Hussain unconditionally. It is striving for developing a consensus on minimum national agenda among all the political parties by interacting different political leaders.

Former federal minister and central leader of the MQM Dr Farooq Sattar has said that the delegation of the MQM would have a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif shortly but no schedule had been determined by either side for the meeting.

In a brief chat with The News here Sunday evening, Dr Farooq Sattar said that his party has already set out four- point agenda for dialogue with the government. Eradication of terrorism, sustainable peace in Karachi, durable solution of Balochistan situation and economic crisis are the salient points of discussion with the prime minister but the request for the meeting with the prime minister is yet to materialise, he said.

Dr Farooq Sattar made it clear that the proposed meeting with the prime minister would be in line with the objectives spelled out by the MQM leader Altaf Hussain for evolving a consensus among the political leaders.

He brushed aside the impression that the fresh contacts between the MQM and ruling PML-N had any link with the joining of the government by the MQM. Dr Farooq Sattar said that Karachi has become a new hub of terrorism and the situation has become intolerable. “In the circumstances we will knock the door of every sane political leader to deal with the menace,” he added.

The government is engaged in developing a policy for counter terrorism and the MQM would like to contribute in the endeavour. He said that Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Abad did explain certain points to the PML-N delegation that came for seeking support to its presidential candidate the other day but certain political dimensions of the situation were also required to be explained and the MQM delegation will explain the same when it will have a meeting with the prime minister, he said.

but MQM was needed because Sindh provincial government couldn't be called for election without 1/3 members. PML-F and PML N combined in Sindh assembly have 12 seats which means the presidential election couldn't take place in Sindh.
