Getting my Motorcycle license finally after years of contemplating. Used to ride a 1957 Enfield - a 250 cc Motorcycle.

My criteria -

1. sports touring type motorcycle - plan to do long distance trips
2. Need to accomodate a passenger as well
3. About $10,000 budget - can be 1 or 2 grand more
4. Looking for used motorcycle mostly


What I have in mind now in no particular order -

1. Ducati Multistrada
2. Ducati Monster
3. Harley Dyna
4. BMW F800

It depends on your riding style and how long your "long distance" means.

Your list is too varied to give any ideas of what you have in mind.

All I quoted are Touring types and except for Dyna it is all sports touring types. Long distance would mean 200 miles to 300 miles per day. I do not want to opt for cruiser type motorcycles.

Almost any bike can be used as a sports tourer for 2-300 miles per day, if riding solo. $10k is a good budget that opens up many possibilities, but for the makes you have selected it would nearly all be used bikes.

How many miles have you ridden before? Getting a 600 cc class bike and putting a few miles under your belt first would be a better way than getting into saddle with a 800 lbs monster without prior experience. And do the MSF course too.

I have ridden an Enfield 250 CC in India. Going to use that experience to switch to 800 cc ones instead of getting a 300 CC ninja or a 500 CC bike. I am going for used bikes and not new ones. You can't get a Motorcycle license without doing MSF course and I am on the verge of completing it.

If you are planning for longer trips BMW F800 is good option. You have lot of after market accessories and support than Ducs. Also BMW has good support and many local groups. Monster is not long distance type good for canyon carving. Also with ducs comes premium. Another option to add to list is Triumph Tiger 800 or suzuki Vstroms. Good luck & Ride safe.

Also checkout new Vstrom 650 Adv its in your budget and comes with side cases & ABS. All you need extra is heated grip. If you get used 2012 , you are in luck.
whichever bike you end up buying, consider $1K+ for gears/helmet/boot etc. If you are not sure what to buy , try used ones in craigslist or advrider.com.

His list excluded Japanese names so I assumed he would prefer a European or US make. But you are right, the VStrom is a good bike to consider. There are other choices too like the Honda VFR800.
