Mother Language Day 2017

শুভ মাতৃভাষা দিবস

International Mother language Day today in remembrance of the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement in 1952.

Let's celebrate the love for our mother language and the peace in speaking it.

Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education

On the occasion of this Day, I launch an appeal for the potential of multilingual education to be acknowledged everywhere, in education and administrative systems, in cultural expressions and the media, cyberspace and trade.

Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General

UNESCO celebrates International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on February 21, 2017 under the theme “Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education”. To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. It is through the mastery of the first language or mother tongue that the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are acquired. Local languages, especially minority and indigenous, transmit cultures, values and traditional knowledge, thus playing an important role in promoting sustainable futures.

Golla, Habibulla, Rahmatulla, all the same......

Further - here are a collection of (ahem) faces........to give you all some idea.....

i puked a little in my mouth seeing some of these girls.....

okay i puked a lot.... seeing most of em.

unfortunately my english is much better than my mother tongue..... horrible and sad truth! infact english is so much a part of life that all the other language i know are below it...

yeah but those words are part of the south indian language now... most arabic/persian words are not part of bd language(might be some urdu influence here and there among biharis)
also bangladeshis seem to have weird names like Sk raqueeb rajib... or farhana akhter moina... not that am complaining... :)
you call those weird.... then say how does "hippy akthar oishi" sound to you? xD

. .
Well nowadays there is a new generation of Bengalis here abandoning their language for Hindi/Urdu and becoming wannabe Pakistanis or Indians. Bangladeshis should be proud of their history and culture and not accept any skin bleached Bollywood influence.

I think our govts dont provide us with full picture of history in many places. They only boast about the part that is needed only to attain their vested interest. I found myself quite surprised after getting to know that the then Pakistan govt inserted Bangla as the second Official State Language in its constitution in 1956. How many of common Bangladeshi actually know about this? In school kids are tought in the sequence of 1947,1952, general election, 1969,1971. After 1971 there is nothing till 1975. Thats it we learn through books! We have been consistantly being fed segment by segment of our history. And its really sad. I guess History is indeed written and presented by the Victor regardless of whether its ture, partially true or outright false.

Generally Bangladeshi names are mix of Arabic+Persian+Bengali due to Muslim influence over Hindu Bengali culture. Bangladeshi Muslim names may sound weird because culture of Bengali Muslims has always been a mix of Hindu Sanskrit + Muslim Islamic culture. For a non-Bengali Muslim Bangladeshi names may sound weird but its the result of cultural overlap between Hinduism and Islam. Muslims search Quranic names ( good meaningful words mentioned in Quran) when a Child is born. Full name is mostly Arabic but Persian names are not uncommon. Nickname (Dak nam) is often Bengali name.
