At least 2,417 people have been killed in Iraq in June 2014, the majority of them civilians, according to figures released by the United Nations. The death toll in the violence-plagued country is the highest since May 2007.

The dead include 1,531 civilians and 886 members of Iraq's security forces killed in terrorist attacks and violence, UNIRAQ, the UN mission to Iraq, said in a statement.

In addition, a total of 2,287 people were injured in attacks in June.

“This staggering number of civilian casualties in one month points to the urgent need for all to ensure that civilians are protected,” said Nikolay Mladenov, the UN’s envoy in Iraq.

The UN body, however, didn’t take into account casualties in the Anbar province in western Iraq, which is mostly controlled by armed Sunni radicals.

In the face of ISIS’s military offensive, Mladenov called on Iraq’s national leaders to work together “to foil attempts to destroy the social fabric of Iraqi society.”

“What can be achieved through a constitutional political process cannot be achieved through an exclusively military response,” he said. “Security must be restored, but the root causes of violence must be addressed.”

The UN figures for dead and wounded are higher than those released by the Iraqi authorities, who recorded 1,922 people killed in June, including 1,393 civilians, 380 soldiers and 149 police officers. The data was compiled by Iraq’s health, interior and defense ministries.

The government’s figures for the injured are higher than those put out by the UN, however; in the total of 2,610 people wounded in June, there are 1,745 civilians, 644 soldiers and 221 police officers.

The figures presented by Iraq Body Count (IBC), a web-based effort to record civilian deaths in Iraq, give a death toll for the month of at least 1,893 civilian deaths up to June 29.

The death toll has significantly increased since radical Sunni militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS/ISIL) started capturing cities in the north of the country in early June. The group seized major areas of western and northern Iraq in recent weeks, committing mass murders of opposing Shia Muslims in the region.

On Sunday, the jihadists declared the captured territories from Iraq's Diyala province to Syria's Aleppo a new Islamic State, or caliphate. They removed 'Iraq and the Levant' from their name, urging other radical Sunni groups to pledge their allegiance.

All you need to know about ISIS and what is happening in Iraq.

While the bloodshed remains below the levels seen in 2006 and 2007, 2013 was Iraq's deadliest since violence began to ease in 2008. At least 8,868 people were killed in terrorist attacks or other acts of violence, UN statistics say.

RIP :(

1 disaster after another....when will they learn unity will help?

When the oil runs out situation of ME will be worse than Africa.

Depends, for some nations very rich in oil. They have a policy in place which will make their economy less dependent on oil over a stated period of time. And their oil is still going to be here for a long time.

Other nations don't have oil and have not reflected upon Africa's state. Like Egypt and Syria, used to rely on tourism and agriculture. Now Syria is a huge conflict.

. .
When will wars in ME stop completely ?
ME is not even close to being the most war-torn part of the world. In fact 90% of the entire ME is peaceful and have been for a very long time.

Europeans killed 80 million of each other in the span of 30 years from 1915-1945.

At the current rate the ME need to be on fire for the next 2000 years to reach those numbers.

10 times as many people probably die from hunger each month in India alone or poverty related diseases.

When the oil runs out situation of ME will be worse than Africa.

What a moronic claim. The ME is the cradle of civilizations and was the power of the world for millenniums. Well before any oil and gas was known. Quit trolling or educate yourself.

Also this coming from an Indian (the ME hosts millions of your likes that escaped India which has the highest number of poor people on the planet to seek greener pastures) is simply laughable and idiotic. I don't even want to elaborate on that further. The stupidity of that comment should be obvious with all due respect.

Please stick to topics that you actually have knowledge about. I suggest some Indian-Bengali or Sri-Lankan relations.

Why do you harass members by getting their nationality involved whenever they share their opinion about Middle East?

How is stating facts harassment? I just don't like ignorants that comment on Arab affairs that they have no clue about. I don't think I need to elaborate on that. This section is my living proof.

You don't ever see me commenting on South Asian affairs as I rarely have a clue about the internal dynamics of that region outside of Afghanistan/Pakistan to an extent.

Harraasment is when ignorant outsider trolls spam this section with nonsense and idiotic comments everywhere.

No one tells you not to comment on South Asian affairs, that doesn't mean you don't let others comment on ME.
If people don't know enough ME, either teach them the right thing or leave them. Harassing them will only give people living in the area a bad name.

I am not harassing them since they are the ones that are provoking and writing nonsense. I could easily troll any South Asian country 100 times worse than they do and probably also write some nonsense based on stereotypes but I don't do that as this would be ridiculous. They should do the same.

I criticized two Indian users that did the same a few days ago and 2 other Indian users actually agreed with me and my posts.

As long as there are no insults I see no problem.

The reaction would be the same or even worse if we Middle Eastern people would do the same.

Also believe me when I say that I tried the pedagogic way 100's of times but when you do it 200' times it becomes tiring and annoying.

I understand you find it really hard to stick to topic . Europe today is most people place on this planet . Also poverty is not equal to war . Even in past couple of decades there have been so many big wars in ME that it overshadows total number of wards fought in the same period in the rest of the world combined .

Where was the provocation . Stop getting your undergarments in a twist over a single statement that did not involve either you or your country .
