Dear Indians, don't be harsh on Bangladeshis in India. They are all not criminals. Majority are economic migrants. Where will they go if India rejects them?

Dhaka – More than 2,000 Bangladeshi nationals have been languishing in jails of neighbouring India as they were detained over various charges in the past years, according to an account placed in parliament by the Foreign Minister.

Abul Kalam Abdul Momen, the foreign minister, said on Thursday the highest number of Bangladesh nationals detained abroad are in India. The minister was responding to questions in parliament during the regular question-answer session.

Replying to a question from M Abdul Latif of a Chattogram constituency, the minister said that a total of 8,848 Bangladesh nationals are currently in jails or detention centres of different countries.

Among them 2,049 Bangladeshis, the highest number, are in Indian jails, he said.

6 Bangladeshis are in the jails of United Arab Emirates, 768 in Saudi Arabia, 693 in Bahrain, 572 in Malaysia, 442 in Oman and 316 in Kuwait.

The minister said diplomatic efforts are on with those countries to reduce the tenure of punishment or complete clemency for the detainees.

Back to Bangladesh? Who will ensure job for them? Bangladesh does not have much jobs in domestic market. We promote our people to go abroad for job as there are not adequate number of jobs in the country. Our economy depends on Bangladeshis sending remittance from abroad.

India is the natural home for Bangladeshi migrants who are poor. Does not have much money to go other countries. They migrate to India for economic reason. To feed their family. On humanitarian ground don't be harsh on poor migrants.

Does this figure also include the undocumented immigrants lodged in various detention centres pending their hearing in the Foreigners Tribunal, or only those convicted by courts in India for criminal activities..

We have enough unemployed in our country and there is no place for us to accommodate your lot which is also why a lot of poor migrate to the middle east for employment. Also, a major chunk of these B'deshis rotting in Indian jails are Rohingyas or smugglers
