On 24 February 2025, two Molotov cocktails were thrown into the building's grounds as part of an attack on the Russian Consulate General in Marseille, France. Although there was an explosion as a result of the incident thankfully no serious injuries or damage were recorded. Police and firefighters were among the emergency personnel who were quickly sent to the location to handle the situation.
Around 7:30 am. local time the attack took place in Marseille's 8th district which is home to a number of diplomatic missions. The idea of Molotov cocktails "does not seem to be the right one at this stage" according to local authorities who have not confirmed the usage of Molotov cocktails despite early reports indicating their use.The event had "all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack" according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova who emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive investigation and heightened security for Russian diplomatic posts overseas. The event took place three years after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine which has increased tensions and presented Russia with diplomatic difficulties around the world.
Although they have opened an investigation into the attack, the French police have not yet revealed the identity or motivations of the attackers. The incident highlights the continued security threats that Russian diplomatic missions around the world confront especially in light of the protracted crisis in Ukraine and tense relations with other countries.
