Modi's Rally, Sharif remark: Modi fans a row that never was

Sharif-Manmohan: Two Punjabi PMs and one dehati aurat controversy : The Log, News - India Today

Did Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif call Manmohan Singh a dehati aurat? Dehati aurat literally means village woman or femme rurale, if you are into this whole French thing without knowing a thing about lingua franca de francais. What is the fracas about then?

A curious kerfuffle broke out over Mr Sharif's uncivilised comment after senior Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir made public what was an off-the-cuff comment.

The other journalist present at the interview, Barkha Dutt from India, defended the Pakistani premier by saying Sharif did not call Manmohan Singh a 'dehati aurat'. It was just an allegorical tale.

To @narendramodi I want to say: there was no pejorative word used for @PMOIndia in my presence. And surely I am not THE story, Mr Modi?!

Sharif was upset that Pakistan raised by India with Obama. In this context he told an allegorical tale about a dispute in a village (cont)

barkha dutt ✔ @BDUTT
In Sharif's tale there was a dispute between 2 villagers, one was a woman. Story ended with how fights shd be settled between parties (cont)

barkha dutt ✔ @BDUTT
Sharif's allegorical account was all about how disputes shd not involve third parties. Not once was a slur passed by him against the PM

barkha dutt ✔ @BDUTT
Pakistanis will need to ask @hamidMirGEO why he distorted what was to me just an illustrative story on India-Pak-US equations

barkha dutt ✔ @BDUTT
There is NO recording of the conversation off camera with Sharif. It was a conversation over a cup of tea, distorted by some Pak Media

So we have a broad consensus on this: That Sharif said Manmohan Singh complaining to US about Pakistan was like a dehati aurat involving a third party in a dispute with her husband. For the sake of clarity, he did not say Manmohan himself was like a dehati aurat, he only said his whining about Pakistan to Obama was so dehati aurat-like. The pinprick shouldn't prick because Manmohan is not an aurat in the first place. Dehati can be a complement if you look at the word from the aam aadmi point of view.

What have we learnt today? 1. Nawaz Sharif has no respect for dehati aurat. 2. Nawaz Sharif has some respect for Manmohan Singh, but little for his complainist behaviour.

The two leaders are meeting later in the day, and this allegorical tale is not expected to cloud the 'cordial atmosphere' of their meeting.

Pakistani Prime Minister is expected to invite Mr Manmohan Singh to Pakistan to make a trip to Singh's ancestral village, Gah. The word village will prick Manmohan Singh, since by now he knows about the dehati aurat debate.

The truth is India is not involving a third party. What does one do when a kid terrorises the neighbourhood? Slapping the kid is an option but speaking to the kid's guardians is a valid option too. India has chosen the second option. The US feeds Pakistan, both with dollars and fighter planes. Pakistan plays with bombs and guns, hurts itself more than it hurts others. But others when they do get hurt have the right to go up to the kid's daddy and complain. But the kid is nasty and calls her dehati aurat.

These are tough times for the man called Manmohan Singh. The 79-year-old man has to wake up at 4 am in New York only to hear the young gun gunning for him in Delhi. Complete nonsense. He cannot complain to Obama about Rahul Gandhi. The one he complains about equates him with a dehati aurat.

The Theek Hai jokes are in poor taste. Because kuchh bhi theek nahin hai.

Why is it Indian media bending over backward to absolve NS of this? Afterall this was attributed to NS by one of his own most trusted & long time media partner. Infact it's NS & Pakistan who should be trying their hard to absolve.. not India.

Yeah, really stupid. Whether Hamid Mir made up the story or not, that is a Pakistani problem. The PM of Pakistan saw it right to invite Hamid Mir to what was an interaction, whether off or on the record. It reflects poorly on NS either way. Barkha Dutt crying herself hoarse is irreleavant & pointless. She has credibility issues that make anything she says soubtful, regardless of whether it was true or not. In any case Barkha Dutt doesn't realise that she is a journalist, not a diplomat. There is no need for her to intervene in this matter except to simply say whether or not that statement was made in her presence. Hamid Mir is after all equally entitles to his own take over whether or not the story was meant as an allegorical one. Her opinion need not be the only one. She was almost behaving towards Hamid Mir, the way the BJP behaves with the Congress(or vice versa). Silly.

Hours before Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif were to meet in New York on Sunday, a controversy erupted over a reference the Pakistan Prime Minister had allegedly made for his Indian counterpart, during a breakfast meeting with two journalists on Friday.

While both the journalists, Hamid Mir of Pakistan and Barkha Dutt of NDTV 24X7, played down the row, saying Sharif's remark of "dehati aurat" was in course of giving an analogy regarding dispute resolution, what blew up matters was Narendra Modi raising the same during his speech in Delhi, and calling it "the biggest insult" of the PM.

The controversy began with a comment by Mir on Geo TV that Sharif had told Dutt and him, "It seems as if Manmohan Singh went to complain to Barack Obama about me like a 'dehati aurat'." In his meeting with the US President, Singh had raised attacks on India and said there were "no signs of diminution" in its terror campaign.

Dutt took quickly to Twitter, saying "this (Mir's version) is a distortion entirely" and Sharif said "nothing of this kind". While there were bits of the interaction that were off the record, she said, this was a distortion of even the remarks off the record. And that Sharif never used a pejorative word about the PM.

Mir later tweeted that Dutt had left the venue to get her camera and that she was not present at all times during the interaction. At the same time, the Pakistani journalist also agreed that Sharif had not said anything derogatory about Singh.

Sharif later told NDTV that Singh "is a good man", and that during his meeting with the Indian leader, he would renew Pakistan's invitation to him to visit the country.

In his speech, Modi also said: "I want to ask those journalists, I don't know who they were but journalists of my country who were having sweets with Nawaz Sharif when he was abusing our Prime Minister, calling him village woman, I expected those Indian journalists, the country expected them, to refuse the sweets and walk out."

Munna you have nowhere to hide. The more you criticise us the more we will come back at you. If you are ready to give then be ready to take also. You must have realised that you are a tiny minority on PDF. Don't think that you will insult the majority and get away with it.

haha...shows indian politicians maturity......if a harmless remark like that can make them go berserk, lets call them some more......
