How many of you knew about this disease :woot::woot:

The pathophysiology of this disease is due to a mutation of the Beta globin chain of the hemoglobin , which leads to valine to be substituted for glutamic acid. The result of this is the loss of elasticity of erythrocytes (red blood cells), and thus it manifests in a sickle-like shape, hence its name, "sickle cell anemia". The irregular shape is responsible for resulting vaso-occlusive disease in the circulatory system, as well as hypertrophy of the spleen and liver leading to hepatosplenomegaly in palpation of the liver and spleen.

:o:

Only Medical students!

Yes, medical students, as well as graduate students. ;)

Gene Therapy is used nowadays. And since SCD is a recessive disease, its important for couples to screen themselves in order to find out the probability of their offspring from inheriting it in the event that either one of them are either carriers or plagued by SCD.

This is a very interesting synopsis @amygdaloideum , I'll have to get this book now.
I've heard a different version of it.........
When Swamiji was in Japan, once he bought some fruits from a vendor/shop, the seller cheated him(gave him rotten fruits) but Swamiji didn't realize as he was new to the country and just relied on the seller.
A local Japanese standing by saw the incident and when Swamiji was about to leave the shop, he intervened, criticized the vendor and made sure that Swamiji got good fruits.......
Swamiji thanked him and when he was leaving, the local person requested Swamiji to not mention the incident to his countrymen when he returns to his country as it would 'show Japan in bad light'......
Later, while talking about patriotism and love for the country, Swamiji recalled the incident and said that it is an example of true patriotism......the local Japanese was a true patriot, he didn't want his country's image to be tarnished.....
