Modi is desperate. He knows U.S is leaving Afghanistan and Pakistan and China will be more active in the region.

India and China have relations that are very wide ranging and on multiple issues.
Even their Premier chose to visit India in his first foreign visit. Not any other country including Pakistan. That was a powerful message to everyone including Pakistan.

So you would be wise not to confuse Indo-Chinese relations and reduce them to Afghanistan.

2 days back Modi spoke to Chinese premier. Yesterday Chinese envoy meet with Indian counterparts and on 8th June, Chinese foreign minister is coming to India and at last Modi and Chinese premier are meeting in July in Brazil.
Things are going quick.
