Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration denied Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad a right to fly over India during his recent trip to Pakistan to discuss possibilities of enhanced bilateral trade and development and to attend the country’s National Day Parade on March 23.

Sources privy to the development told The News that the permission was withdrawn at the last minute, forcing the Malaysian premier to take a much longer route over the Arabian Sea and cruise as far as Oman before returning to Islamabad.

International relations analysts say the incident “if happened” is “fairly rare” as India and Malaysia have a history of maintaining friendly ties over the years. Both countries have a bilateral trade worth over $10 billion and were hoping to take it to $25 billion by 2020.

Ties between Malaysia and India showed a “marked upswing” during Najib Razak’s government. Razak visited India multiple times and during his last trip in 2017, Malaysian businessmen signed deals worth $36 billion in areas like infrastructure development, food security and building of smart cities.

A senior retired Pakistani diplomat said such a development was very rare between countries that were not overtly engaged in hostilities against each other. Yes, it can happen during “erratic” time as we have between Pakistan and India at the moment but that also shows the meanness of the Modi administration, he said.

Malaysia is home to over 1.7 million Hindus of Indian origin who make up almost 86 percent of all the Hindus in the country. Prime Minister Mohamad himself is of Indian origin. His grandfather, Iskandar, was brought to Malaya in the late 1870s by the British East India Company from Kerala in south India to Kedeh royal palace as an English language tutor.

what is your source ?

Modi is so petty. We just have to sit back.

He will turn all Muslim brotherly nations of ours against him.

Curses on our past three ineffectual governments who forced Pakistan into self-imposed exile, while India ran all around the world earning Propaganda victories against us.

Tables have turned now.

My source is my brain. Try to think for 1 minute why would Modi do something this petty when India-Malaysia trade is tens of billions and tens of billions of MoUs between the countries along with upcoming Tejas sale that Modi is looking for. Imagine how much it would help him in the election to further line his pockets. Would he do something this stupid that gains him absolutely nothing not even respect from some Malaysia hater in India? But could possibly cost India even $1million?

Let me know your thoughts. If I am wrong I will be happier than you I promise you that.

Can't agree more with this sensible argument. But, this "Malaysia hater" phrase is relatively new to India I guess. I mean there is just no reason to hate Malaysia. :-)

Actually that suits us pretty well.

Tantrums of a small mind in big office

Yes, I know that. And I also know that there does exist air-route from Mumbai, Delhi to Islamabad etc. so why the Malaysians took the longer route is what amuses me ??

You know they eat beef?

It's fake news. Someone is trying to create a wedge between India and Malaysia. There's absolutely no reason to deny Malaysia's PM access to India's air space. This is a courtesy among countries.

Hell, both Indian and Pakistan airline transit each countries air space and relations between the two countries are at a low point.
