Modernizing PAK DEF.

.
I am aware of the fact that PAF has plan to induct MICA but are they also thinking about VL MICA?

VL MICA

Vertical launch short range air defence system

Operational requirement

Since the mid-nineties, the air threat has intensified. This is due to the increased possibility of saturating attacks, involving a large number of platforms (fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters), as well as to the proliferation of targets with low signatures, especially Precision Guided Missiles, UAVs and cruise missiles.

The new SHOARD weapon systems capable of defeating both the conventional and emerging threats must be able to :
engage several targets simultaneously;
resist to severe EM- or IR countermeasures;
apply a distributed architecture;
have a 360° coverage.

Additionally, new systems must offer low life cycle cost, based on simplified training, operations and maintenance, together with reduced manpower.

The MBDA solution

Vertical Launch Mica is able to respond to all of the requirements off the new generation SHORADS. Based on the recently qualified MICA air-to-air missile, it combines :

multi-target capability provided by its Fire and Forget guidance mode;
very high level of resistance to countermeasures thanks to the possibility to fire missiles fitted either with an active RF or with a passive IIR seeker from the same launcher;
vertical launch with 360° coverage, due to the Thrust Vectoring Control system (TVC);
outstanding manoeuvrability, including a possible 30 g at ranges exceeding 12 km, due to the missile’s long chord wings and to the TVC;
easy integration to launching vehicles, made possible by a storage / launch container;
the capability to intercept targets at altitudes in excess of 9000 metres.

The VL Mica ground based system is based on an open, distributed architecture, composed of the following modules :

a 2-man crew, vehicle-mounted launcher, installed on a standard 5-ton class vehicle, which transports and fires 4 missiles,
a radar, which can be any 3-D, track-while-scan system having a range of 50 km, covering altitudes up to 9000 m and fitted with an IFF,
a Tactical Operations Centre (TOC), from which the launchers and the radar are remotely controlled and which performs threat analysis, target assignation and system monitoring.

Status of programme

The two versions of the MICA air-to-air missile (IR and RF) are fully qualified and in mass production, thus eliminating all development-related risk.
The design of the vertical launch container has already been validated through live firings.

SPADA 2000

Ground based air defence missile system

Operational requirement

A system capable of protecting of vital assets from air attacks conducted in a dense ECM and clutter environment, including precision guided munitions and tactical missiles.

The MBDA solution

SPADA 2000 is a unique all weather solution for that mission. Its design comprises the following:

modular, flexible and open architecture for dispersed deployment of constituent units
high tactical mobility and aero-transportability, through extensive use of ISO Standard modules and special built-in devices for lifting and levelling
fast deployment and set-to-operate, thanks to the embedded mission planning, digital map loading and processing, automatic navigation and automatic system initialisation
enhanced firing power and engagement envelope to counter simultaneous attacks of targets in close formation
capable of integrating and of tactically co-ordinating existing light anti-air weapons, such as guns.

MAIN FEATURES and ADVANTAGES

The basic SPADA 2000 configuration consists of a Detection Centre and of 2 Firing Sections (expandable to 4). Up to 10 light anti-air weapons can be managed by the system in addition to its Firing Sections.

The Detection Centre is composed of a 3D volumetric air surveillance radar having a TWS capability of up to 100 air tracks, within its 60 km range, and of an Operation Centre

The Firing Section is composed of a tracking and illumination radar with its control unit and of two Missile Launchers, with 6 ready-to-fire ASPIDE 2000 missiles each.

The tracking and Illumination radar has an effective range of 40 km, while the ASPIDE 2000 missile has an intercept envelope of over 20 km.

Status of programme

The system is in service in Spain and Italy.

Pakistan has the problem that there is almost no part of their border that they can leave unprotected. Their largest border is with India, and for obvious reasons that needs to be protected. A very close second, they have a huge border with Afghanistan, and, due to the war, not only do they need to protect that more than ever, it is not just from insurgents that they need to protect it. It is from their allies, the Americans, that there is now coming the biggest threat in that region.
Iran has never been a friend of Pakistan since 1979 and due to Balochi unrest that region needs to be protected.

June issue of Asian Military Review reported the following.........

Swiss re-authorise defence exports to Islamabad

In April, the Swiss government removed restrictions on defence exports to Pakistan that it put in place last year after Pakistan’s president Pervez Musharraf instigated a state of emergency. The removal of the restrictions will allow a number of important defence transfers to now go through.

In removing the restrictions the Federal Council effectively gave the green light to Oerlikon Contraves to deliver a total of 24 air defence batteries and ammunition worth $153 million.

According to local reports, six of the batteries had already been delivered when the government decided to suspend exports to Pakistan last November. The systems in question are believed to be based on Oerlikon Contraves 55 mm twin gun and missile launcher Skyguard unit.

What I doubt is that the gun should be 35mm, and not 55mm because Pak already has some 200 Oerlikon guns of 35mm calibre. And which missile possibly it can launch?
