New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) Modern combat jets, six of which are in contention for an Indian Air Force order for 126 planes, will be inducted by 2020, even as the Soviet-era MiG-21 fleet which is the mainstay of the force will be phased out by 2017, parliament was informed Wednesday.

'Among the proposals (for the modernisation of the IAF, 126 MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) will be inducted by 2020,' Defence Minister A. K. Antony said while answering a supplementary in the Rajya Sabha.

'By 2017, the MiG-21 will be replaced,' he said, adding: 'We are also inducting the (indigenous) LCA (light combat aircrafts) the IOC (initial operational clearance) for which has been successfully obtained (from the IAF).

The minister said that due to 'historical reasons', the IAF was hitherto not able to acquire modern aircraft but this situation was now being reversed.

He also rejected suggestions that poor quality of parts were being supplied for the IAF's fleet of MiG-21, 27 and 29 jets after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

'After disintegration of Soviet Union some factories had gone to countries other that Russia. There was no complaint of quality though there were complaints of time schedules (not being met),' Antony added.

The MMRCA contract is worth $10.4 billion. The US F-16 and F-18, the European Eurofighter Typhoon, the French Rafale, the Swedish Gripen and the Russian Mig-35 are in contention for the order, which might go up to 200 planes.

A decision on awarding the tender is likely later this year.

. .
that means complete induction by 2025 and has delays of 3-4 years is expected then full fleet not before 2030....the time when Euro fighter will be equal to present IAF Marut in technology!

Guys u dont understand
Read the first posts carefully

Antony said 126 jets will be inducted by 2020 not first jet to be inducted by 2020

EARLIER IT WAS PLANNED THAT MMRCA INDUCTION WILL BE COMPLETED BY 2022 @ 16-18 AIRCRAFTS A YR , NOW IT SEEMS THAT INDUCTION WILL BE COMPLETED BY 2020 @ 21 AIRCRAFTS A YR WHICH IS BETTER FOR US SINCE IAF WILL BEGIN INDUCTING FGFA AT AROUND THE SAME TIME , THOUGH THEY PLAN TO INDUCT 50 PAKFA STARTING 2017-18

As far as Migs are concerned IAF will retire some 270 Mig21/27 from service by 2017 , these aircrafts being replaced by some 140 Su30MKI and 60 mmrca + 60 LCA
The only Mig which will remain in service with India will be the Mig29 , with Indian Airforce and Navy operating some 105 of them
Airforce will retire Mig29smt by 2027 while navy will keep its Mig29K till 2040

.
Its simple, the reporter confused between FGFA and MRCA.... as usual.

:disagree::disagree:

.
Antony means that TOTAL INDUCTION Of MMRCA will be done by 2020 ....

.
Its correct, he meant all MRCA will be inducted by 2020. There is no way First jet or first squadron will be inducted by 2020 in any possible way. I just hope IAF and MoD select best fighter in MRCA deal.

. .
it will take years 2020 to induct all 126 MRCA fighters...dont get confused

Its all kinda fuzzy right now. No body knows. There are rumors that the 126 will increase to more than 200. I think that's for sure since many planes would leave the air force soon. But if the order is increased, so will the off-the shelf purchase increase from 18 to maybe 50-60 for faster induction. I hope they start allowing girls to join the air force then. They have rather flimsy excuses about not letting us being a part of the forces actively.
