How did Indian Air force ended up testing aircrafts from 15 tons to 30
tons for MMRCA competition? Was the question I ended up asking an Air
force official on the side lines of Aero India 2011, well the Answer was
much more complex and confusing to even remember, but it did highlighted
Confuse state of mind when IAF issued Request for Proposal (RFP) to
vendors for MMRCA Competition, from single engine Legacy fighter
aircraft like F-16 to next generation 4 ++ Rafale and Eurofighter all
were in the race. IAF wasted time in carrying out Technical and
performance evaluation, rather than simply carryout assessment of its
own requirement based on its operational needs.

Now What started out has single vendor deal for Purchase of French built
Mirage-2000-5, turned into a never ending MMRCA saga and How IAF instead
of taking a firm stand was more confused than ever has the drama
unfolded . Air force knew from the start which aircrafts had
disadvantages and will not make the cut but still went through pain
staking Process of evaluation, thousands of pages of vendor proposals,
Technical evaluation, which delayed the whole process by few years.

15 years of MMRCA Saga has clearly taken a toll on Combat strength of
IAF, while we still talk about possible two front wars with china and
Pakistan, IAF will need around 50 Combat Squadrons to deal with both of
them at two fronts, which is unlikely to happen even post 2035 .Leaving
serious question marks on our long term vision for our air force. IAF
which has sanctioned strength of 42 Combat Squadrons, is down to 38
Squadrons now and with upgrades been carried out to Mig-29 and
Mirage-2000 fleet, in hand Combat Squadrons is much lower. Post 2015 IAF
will be retiring 5 Squadrons of Mig-27 and another 5 Squadrons of older
Mig-21 and also will start phasing out 6 Squadrons of upgraded Mig-21
Bison post 2019 till 2025, which means IAF even with Induction of
Rafale, FGFA, and Tejas MK-1 and Tejas MK-2 in time without delays will
see continuous downfall in Squadron strength and will only reach current
strength of 38 Squadron only in 2032.

Our leaders might lack long term vision but our Air force officials are
also acting like spoiled Brats who have little concerned about Taxpayers
money. IAF is transforming into Top Heavy Air force, with large
induction of Twin engine Heavy class aircrafts, IAF is seriously lacking
perfect combination of Low-Medium-Heavy class of fighters in its fleet,
Legacy Light fighter aircrafts which are been retired are getting
replaced by Heavy class of aircrafts and only Light class aircraft
planned for Induction are Home Grown LCA Tejas Variants. Lack of balance
in its combat fleet is already leading to higher fuel cost, maintenance
cost, higher man hours required to prepare each aircraft per flight even
though number of hours of aircraft flying has not gone up.

Few valid points : Time wasted on weak contender , our leaders lack futuristic vision , etc ... These kind of articles are must for very now to give show the urgency or neck strangling situation only then our baby's netas will do some thing and then even it irritating to hear about mmrca saga . Even our enemy nations with shout " close the ducking deal for duck sake..."

You seem to misunderstand.

The short sighted vision mentioned in the article is the short sight of the IAF.

The spoilt brat mentioned here is the IAF.

The whole freaking deal is a RIP OFF. I can only pray that Modiji has the wisdom to scape it. But that might be too much to ask.

This is the key to IAF incompetance.

Modi ji is a LEADER of men, not a Capitalist. He is also a self proclaimed socialist.

He is more likely to develop the grass root rather than look for short sighted quick returns via big deals.

Considering the BJP is funded by MNPs.. Shree Modi's own record as CM very capitalistic... I dont see the proof in your rather spirited defence.

Every political party is funded by corporates and HNI's that does not mean they own the party. End of the day the party win by votes, cash only help them reach out to the people.

Modi record as CM was outstanding in every area of work INCLUDING the economy. You only happen to know about his economic development because it makes news.

Yeah deal in its final stages :D:D:D article proving it

So you are ok with gifting 9 BILLION $ to France for 50% ToT ?

.
Tejas is horror dream for IAF
Hal really disappoint them
no 1 can trust Hal to deliver tejas at time
MMRCA take almost 5 years to enter service
mig-21 and mig-27 are coffin of IAF
now engine failure issue of su-30 is new headache
mirage fighter also under up gradation process
on the other side both paf and plaaf are aggressively replacing old jets with new one
5th gen fighters for Chinese air force will be ready for induction in next 3-5 year
so
next 5-7 years will be toughest year for indian air force

That's why I said knowingly or unknown we made a huge mistake by delayed mmrca so we need act fast and ink another Air superiority jets other than su 30 mki . Wish we had to choose 35 or etf

BJP is funded by everyone including Indian Big Businesses and small business. You might(?) be surprised to know that the biggest supporters of BJP are small businesses, not the Big Business. Big Business simply jumps whenever they see anything that might profit them. In this case, it was in their interest in having Congress loose.

Though Modi is his own man regardless of whether he has been funded by them or not. In Gujarat govt, despite having absolute majority, instead of selling off loss making PSU's to Private Sector(what capitalists want) he took a lot of effort and turned them around and made them profitable.

Its funny to read articles from self assumed professionals taking jibes at real professionals. That IAF is a professional organization, nobody has any doubts. MMRCA participants, all of them, were on par with each other and it had to take elaborate evaluation to select the contender best suited to IAF requirements.

Basically, in the end, I believe that it all boiled down to the possibility of sanctions in the event of a conflict, availability of spares, parts and training, ToT level and overall cost. However, I now wonder whether MMRCA is the right way to go especially when 5th gen Russian Jets would be on offer soon along with Tejas. It's not like there is impending war looming over the Indian subcontinent.

If IAF are such "professionals" why are you second guessing them about FGFA ? Its self contradictory.

The reality is that the past and present History has proved that IAF is not all that "professional" as we credit them for. They have a rather NARROW definition of professionalism which is not suitable for the 21st century.
