Misbah leads from the front at Lord’s
It was an eventful first day of the first test of Pakistan and England series at Lord’s. Pakistan were at a decent position at the end of day 1 with a score of 282/6 as Pakistan lost two quick in the last hour.
The highlight of the game was Misbah Ul Haq’s impressive century, who was playing his first game at the historical venue of Lord’s. He got his name of the board of honour in the very first attempt. The celebration of Pakistan’s skipper after scoring the century was as magnificent as his innings as the 42-year old did push ups after saluting the dressing room. It proved that how fit he still is.
Misbah Ul Haq won the toss and elected to bat first that was surprising to many cricket experts. In absence of England’s frontline pacer, James Anderson, Stuart Broad took the responsibility to lead the bowling attack.
Mohammad Hafeez and Shan Masood opened the innings for Pakistan, they struggled to get accustomed to the conditions and managed to put the first run on board in the third over. Mohammad Hafeez looked confident and he played his shots, whereas, Shan Masood was overly cautious and eventually lost his wicket after scoring 7 runs at a total of 38 runs. He was caught behind off Chris Woakes.
Mohammad Hafeez miscued a pull shot off Woakes at a score of 40, Jonny Bairstow took the second catch of the match to send Hafeez back in the hut. The pitch wasn’t looking as threatening despite having a grass cover over it, James Ball yorked Azhar Ali in front of the wicket to get his maiden international wicket.
The experienced duo of Misbah Ul Haq and Younis Khan occupied the crease and tested English bowling line to the core. The two steadied the innings by contributing 57 runs together before Younis Khan found Moeen Ali with an irresponsible shot at square leg. The 38-year old managed 33 runs in the innings.
Afterwards, it was the complete dominance of Misbah Ul Haq and Asad Shafiq over England. The young Shafiq was a complete treat to watch, he played some breathtaking drives in his innings of 73 runs. Misbah and Shafiq once again had a solid 148 runs partnership, which was there seventh century stand.
Asad Shafiq lost his wicket just before the end of play when he nicked one off Chris Woakes to Bairstow while leaving the ball. Night-watchman, Rahat Ali came out to replace him, however, he dragged the last ball of the day on to the stumps.
Lord’s could witness 87 overs in the first day’s play. Chris Woakes was by far the pick of the bowler for the hosts, who hunted 4 Pakistani batsmen leaking just 45 runs in 18 overs.
Sarfraz Ahmed is likely start the proceedings of the second day at Lord’s with his skipper, who is well set at the score of 110*.
