The world experienced a great leap in science when Einstein proposed his theories of Special and General Relativity. For about 200 years physics depended on Newtonian laws. It was thought then that time was constant; an hour is the same all over, under any conditions.

Understanding of time soon changed, and time was different ever since.

Let's view the way Newton thought of time. It was said that time can be related to the running of water in a river. Should the speed of the water be measured at any point, it would yield equal results. The same was thought of time; if time was measured at any point in the universe it would be the same.

Suppose George and Bill synchronised their watches. George left on a super fast spaceship, and came back an hour later (according to his own watch). Newton would say that Bill would have waited an hour for George to come back, and their watches would read the same time.

.
Einstein disagrees! According to his theories, time is relative, and it depends on the speed at which one travels. Suppose that George left earth on the same spaceship at 1:00 p.m. travelling at a speed close to that of light, and suppose that Bill was in some way was looking at George's watch. Bill would realise that George's watch is advancing very slowly compared with his. So if Bill's watch said 2:00 p.m. then George's watch would have said 1:05 p.m. for example. On the other hand, George would see that Bill was acting a bit strange; he would see him doing everything pretty fast, as if he was in a movie that was being fast forwarded.

Strange indeed! This time difference applies to everything surrounding both George and Bill. If George returns one year later (according to his own time), he would find out that Bill aged 12 years. Not only this, but both George and Bill, separately, feel normal; George does not feel that his life was moving any faster than normal, nor does Bill feel that his life was moving any slower than normal.

Scientists used a Muon (a particle smaller in size than an atom) to prove the idea of time relativity. A Muon lives for about 2.2 microseconds, after which it changes into an electron. This short life, is measured for a Muon at rest. When a Muon is travelling, on the other hand, at speeds very close to the speed of light, it was noticed that it lived 30 times longer than it did when it was at rest. It was the same with George and Bill. Bill noticed that George's life was prolonged. There were other tests that scientists conducted that proved this theory correct, and they can be found in physics books all over.

.
Einstein discovered this idea in 1921, but before this discovery by about 1330 years, God, in His Holy book (The Holy Qur'an), mentioned the idea of relativity in clear terms. It was not understood until God revealed the same idea to one of his creatures in a mathematical form. God says in the Holy Qur'an:

"He will plan His ordinance from the heaven unto the earth, then will it go up to Him in a day the duration of which is a thousand years according as you reckon." (32:5)

Also, "The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years." (70:4)

Notice that the first mentioned verse offers four phrases and words that constitute the heart of the special theory of relativity, and they are: "go up," "a day," "a thousand years," and "according as you reckon." The verse indicates that God's ordinance is moving upwards, and that it's not static. Then it tells us that one day equals our understanding of 1000 years. When these orders leave earth upwards they experience one day of travel themselves, but 1000 years would have passed by us before the orders reach their destination. That is to say, if you were travelling in a spaceship alongside these orders and looked at your watch when you reached the target you would have experienced one day of travel, but look out the spaceship's window, and you'd see generations and generations had passed on earth. If you had left your kids on earth, then you would have become a grand grand grand grand? father.

.
The second verse shows that the angels and the spirit ascend into the heavens in a day equal to fifty thousand years. How could there be a day that is equal to 1000 years, and another that is equal to 50,000 years? is this reasonable? Absolutely! Time is relative, and it depends on the speed of moving objects relative to each other. The faster the object the larger the time difference. Which means that the angels and the spirit are faster than the orders in their ascensions.

If we try to calculate the speed of the angels using the equation Einstein developed we would find out that we need a calculator that operates with a large number of decimal points. I have tried to calculate their speed once, but I couldn't. The computer I am currently using is not precise enough, and I couldn't get enough decimal points. The reason for this is because the speed of angels is very close to the speed of light. (You can find these equations in books of physics. They are not hard to find!)

Chapter from Usool at-Tafseer [The Methodology of Qur'aanic Explanation] © 1997 Dar al-Fatah. This part of the chapter is based on Dr. Maurice Bucaille's book "Moses and Pharaoah. The Hebrews in Egypt"

For a scripture to qualify as divinely revealed it must be totally accurate in its descriptions of reality: the past, the present and the future. The Qur'aan has many stories about previous prophets and their peoples. Some of these stories have elements in them that can be checked out for their accuracy. One example of the Qur'aan's precision in its historical descriptions is in the story of Prophet Yoosuf (Joseph), who was sold as a slave in Egypt, but rose to become an important official in the government, which made it possible for him to bring his whole family to live there in honor. Most historians agree that the entry of the Children of Israel into Egypt occurred when the northern half of the country was ruled by the Hyksos, Semitic invaders who were the first non-Egyptians to rule that country since the rise of the Old Kingdom. The Qur'aan always calls the Egyptian ruler who confronted Moses by the title of "Pharaoah." Every Egyptian ruler was called by this title starting from the reign of Amenhotep IV in the 4th century BC, but not before that. Yoosuf lived at least two hundred years before Amenhotep IV. The Qur'aan consistently refers to the ruler in Yoosuf's time, as "al-malik," the king:

"The king [al-malik] said, 'Bring him to me." [Soorah Yoosuf (12):50.]

It should be noted that the Bible refers to the ruler of Joseph's time as "Pharaoah," which was an anachronism inserted by the scribes who wrote the books of the Old Testament centuries after Moses.

In Islam, there is no conflict between faith in God and modern scientific knowledge. Indeed, for many centuries during the Middle Ages, Muslims led the world in scientific inquiry and exploration. The Qur'an itself, revealed 14 centuries ago, is filled with scientific facts and imagery that are supported by modern findings.

The Qur'an instructs Muslims to "contemplate the wonders of creation" (Qur'an 3:191). The entire universe, which was created by Allah, follows and obeys His laws.

Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, explore the universe, and find the "Signs of Allah" in His creation. Allah says:

"Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth;
in the alternation of the night and the day;
in the sailing of ships through the ocean, for the profit of mankind;
in the rain which Allah sends down from the skies,
and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dead;
in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth;
in the change of the winds,
and the clouds which they trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth;
here indeed are Signs for a people that are wise"
(Qur'an 2:164)

For a book revealed in the 7th century A.D., the Qur'an contains many scientifically-accurate statements. Among them:

.
"Do not the unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We split them apart? And We made from water every living thing…" (21:30).

"And Allah has created every animal from water. Of them there are some that creep on their bellies, some that walk on two legs, and some that walk on four..." (24:45)

"See they not how Allah originates creation, then repeats it? Truly that is easy for Allah" (29:19).

.
"It is He Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. All (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its rounded course" (21:33).

"It is not permitted for the sun to catch up to the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. Each just swims along in its own orbit" (36:40).

"He created the heavens and the earth in true proportions. He makes the night overlap the day, and the day overlap the night. He has subjected the sun and the moon to His law; each one follows a course for a time appointed..." (39:5).

"The sun and the moon follow courses exactly computed" (55:5).

.
"You see the mountains and think they are firmly fixed. But they pass away just as the clouds pass away. Such is the artistry of Allah, Who disposes of all things in perfect order" (27:88).

.
"Man We did create from a quintessence of clay. Then we placed him as a drop of sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed. Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood. Then out of that clot We made a fetus lump. Then We made out of that lump bones, and clothed the bones with flesh. Then We developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the Best to create!" (23:12-14).

"But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him of His spirit. And He gave you hearing, and sight, and understanding" (32:9).

"That He did create the pairs, male and female, from a sperm-drop when lodged in its place" (53:45-46).

"Was he not a drop of sperm emitted, then did he become a leach-like clot. Then did Allah make and fashion him in due proportion. And of him He made two sexes, male and female" (75:37-39).

"He makes you in the wombs of your mothers in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness" (39:6).

Science and Islam's close relationship with it played a tremendous role in strengthening my faith and that of scientists throughout history - even today! This is a fascinating section - do take time to explore it!

"There is indeed no human work prior to modern times that contains statements which were equally in advance of the state of knowledge at the time they appeared and which might be compared to the Quran. It comes as no surprise to learn that Religion and Science have always been considered to be twin sisters by Islam and that today, at a time when science has taken such great strides, they still continue to be associated, and furthermore certain scientific data are used for the better understanding of the Quranic text.

"What is more, in a century where, for many, scientific truth has dealt a deathblow to religious belief, it is precisely the discoveries of science that, in an objective examination of the Islamic Revelation, have highlighted the supernatural character of certain aspects of the Revelation.

"The Quran contains infinitely more precise details [than many scientific discoveries today] which are directly related to facts discovered by modern science: these are what exercise a magnetic attraction for today's scientists.

"It is not faith in Islam that first guided my steps, but simple research for the truth. [What led me to this conviction was the fact that it would be unthinkable] for a man of Muhammad's time to have been the author of such statements on account of the state of knowledge in his days."
~ Dr. Maurice Bucaille, an eminent medical scientist and a member of the French Academy of Medicine. He is the author of the book entitled "The Bible, The Quran and Science."

Don't post anything about the Quran then, since this is a debating forum. Proselytizing is strictly prohibited.

We allow criticism of any topic if done appropriately. This definitely would include the Quran as well. However criticism alone does not make the criticizing words correct and thus you are encouraged to defend as well. You SHOULD bear it, you SHOULD tolerate it, so you can defend it.
