Up to everyone to promote gender equality, I guess. Question about gender issues in India. Are boys preferred over girls because they are able to carry on the family name or is it more of a pragmatic issue, like males being better workers in rural areas? In China boys are desired because they can carry on the family name.

Same reasons all around , bro . To carry on family name, for less-privileged class it means recourse to female infanticide , abortions etc . In case of middle class people -- even in well off families the "unsaid" rule for women is of a devoted wife and home-maker etc

Though for the last several years in educated families , girls are encouraged in their career, studies etc and as far as the rural populace is concerned the Govt has their "save the girl child" kind of programs which are effective at times somewhat in bringing about women -empowerment in the national conciousness.

its male dominated world not just one society. these crimes are as much prevalent in so called modern and developed countries as these are present in our countries.

the only thing we are missing is implementation of laws strictly and change in our mentality

Implementation of laws can be done by a strong political government and leaders at the centre .

However change of mentality is a very gradual process which will take decades of efforts by several parties --NGO's , Govt , independent citizens etc

Its a morality exercise basically .

The policewallas are not unparh but they dared to such a crime because the victims familie's are.

Its because Asian countries ---almost all of them have "male -dominant societies" from the Middle-east to south Asia to the far East as well.

In contrast countries like New Zealand etc have managed to successfully develop societies based on ideas of women -empowerment and equal respect for all .

It may well take several more decades for such social transformation to take place in our part of the world and it is NOT dependent on rising Economies or living standards .

The males dominates the whole world, its not just an Asian thing. Nobody is stopping the women with the exceptions of some countries in ME.
