Pakistan has suspended military and intelligence cooperation with the United States in the wake of US President Donald Trump's allegation that Pakistan has given the US "nothing but lies and deceit" and suspension of security aid for Pakistan, Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said while addressing a gathering at Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Speaking during a seminar titled 'Contours of Security Environment of Pakistan', Khan said the US is facing defeat in Afghanistan despite spending billions of dollars. He alleged that the US is using Pakistan as a 'scapegoat' for its failures in Afghanistan.

"Pakistan does not want to put a price on its sacrifices but wants them to be recognised," the defence minister said, adding that Pakistan will not allow Afghanistan's war to be fought on Pakistani territory.

Khan also said that the US is busy in a blame game against Pakistan rather than providing it with assistance to secure the Pak-Afghan border.

Answering a question on the occasion, the minister said that Pakistan took the right steps by blocking Nato supplies to Afghanistan in the aftermath of 2011 attack at Salala check post.

But Pakistan is not taking the same route after Trump's recent tirade as it is a "leverage we want to use at the appropriate time", he clarified.

The defence minister said Iran, China and Russia are as important to the region as the US and reaffirmed Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif's statement signalling that the alliance between Pakistan and the US is over.

"This is not how allies behave," Asif had said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal earlier this week. He maintained that Washington has turned Islamabad into a "whipping boy" for its failures in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon on Monday said that the US has told Pakistan what it must do if it wants Washington to resume paying out hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid.

“Our expectations are straightforward,” Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning told reporters.

“Taliban and Haqqani leadership and attack planners should no longer be able to find safe haven or conduct operations from Pakistani soil.”

Worsening relations
In the new year, Washington has increased pressure on Islamabad to "do more" in the fight against terrorism.

Washington has stated that the suspension of military aid, which came after Trump accused Pakistan of "lies and deceit", is part of America's South Asia strategy.

The development has followed in the aftermath of an increasingly terse back-and-forth between Washington and Islamabad since Trump announced the policy.

In Pakistan, the move has been seen as the first step to implementing Trump’s pledge to tighten economic restrictions on Islamabad.

Despite the tension, however, US and Pakistani officials remain in contact with each other. US Defence Secretary James Mattis on Friday said that the Pentagon was maintaining its communication with the Pakistani military establishment even after the suspension of military assistance.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua has said that Pakistan will continue to engage with Washington as far as possible, because America is not only a global power but also has a regional presence, and "for us it’s almost our neighbour".

Better late than never.
It'd worth to note how much US could suffer without information from Pakistani intelligence agencies.

.
Long overdue and belated step in the right direction for Pakistan gaining strategic independence.

Good reply from Pakistan.

NO need to close transit at this point. Maybe some increase in the fees, why not.

I totally agree with this response...

when trump tweeted his message he was well briefed , and obviously stopping the supply route was the most the most obvious step and they would have been well prepared for that....

so you don't do what your enemy is expecting.... couple of unexpected moves ..keep them guessing and keep them off balance....
.. and keep the option till Americans show their hand.... we can close it or put more money on it when ever we like...

if there is a new terrorist attack in US and it comes out that some kind of intelligence was there in pak hands and has trump not made an enemy out of us that would have been shared.... would do disaster for his presidency....
provided we did not keep info of an imminent attack it self but related info that could have lead to this

China can meet Pak's military needs, they have Iranian energy to grow an stable economy and thrive as an advanced country.

USA is a damned trouble on it's own, throw this parasite out of the land, then Pak-sarzamin would have a fresh breathe

.
Intelligence cooperation with an agency which claim that worlds most wanted terrorist was living under their noses for over a decade but they had no idea about it.

I am sure Americans must be crying rivers.

On the other hand, since in addition to intelligence, defence cooperation is also being suspended, would Pakistan also cancel its order for 12 AH1-Z Cobras?

US Denies Pakistani Claims of Suspension of Military or Intel Cooperation

ISLAMABAD —
The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad is denying Pakistan’s claims it has suspended military or intelligence cooperation with the United States.

Embassy spokesman Richard Snelsire said, “We have not received any formal communication regarding a suspension.”

Earlier Tuesday, in a speech to the Islamabad-based, government sponsored Institute for Strategic Studies, Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khurram Dastgir Khan, said there is "... a wide field of intelligence cooperation and defense cooperation, which we have suspended." But he added, the supply lines for NATO troops in Afghanistan, formally known as the Ground Lines of Communication or the Air Lines of Communication were still open.

Monday, a Pentagon spokesman said the United States had conveyed to Pakistan “concrete steps” to take before the United States would resume hundreds of millions of dollars in aid, which was suspended after U.S. President Donald Trump indicated Pakistan had lied and deceived the United States while providing safe havens to terrorists fighting in Afghanistan.

Pakistan says the United States is scapegoating it for U.S. failures in Afghanistan.

In his address, Khan also reminded the United States it needs Pakistan in its fight against terrorism in Afghanistan. “A reminder is in order. Logistics trump strategy,” he said.

Pakistan blocked the Lines of Communication for months after a 2011 attack by the NATO air force accidentally hit two Pakistani check posts, killing more than two dozen Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistan is considered the safest and cheapest route to resupply NATO troops. Other possible routes that go through Central Asian countries are more expensive and pass through a region Russia considers its backyard. Tensions between the United States and Russia have been high since Russia was accused of meddling in the latest U.S. presidential elections.

But statements from senior U.S. officials indicate that despite these limitations, the administration is serious in its stance that Pakistan needs to change its behavior.

In a Sunday interview with CBS’s Face the Nation, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said, “The president has made very clear that he needs Pakistan to cease being a safe haven for terrorists that threaten the United States of America. End. Period. Full stop.”

Khan said his country wants to keep engagement with the United States open and would use its leverage after the utmost care and deliberation.
