Militants will not be allowed to dictate terms: Gen Kayani

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, on Friday rejected the notion that the peace deal through Sufi Mohammed amounted to giving any 'concession' to the militants, and declared that the army has the resolve to take on the militants. He said that 'victory against terror and militancy will be achieved at all cost'.

Speaking at a meeting of top military commanders, at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, the army chief acknowledged that doubts were being voiced about the intent and capability of the army to defeat the militants. However, his view was that the army 'never has and never will hesitate to sacrifice, whatever it may take, to ensure safety and wellbeing of the people and country’s territorial integrity'.

It was the most direct statement by General Kayani, or any other security or civilian official, about the prevailing situation and the manner in which it needs to be tackled. The statement came following a series of reports from Swat’s adjoining district Buner, and later Shangla, of the Taliban march in the area, with clear signs of the armed militants trying to spread their influence under the cover of the peace deal.

Kayani condemned what he called 'pronouncements' by outside powers that raised doubts on the future of Pakistan, and declared that the militants will not be allowed to 'dictate terms to the government or impose their way of life on the civil society of Pakistan'.

'A country of 170 million resilient people under a democratic dispensation, strongly supported by the army, is capable of handling any crisis that it may confront', he was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the ISPR.

He described recent peace deal with Mullah Fazlullah’s Swat militants as an 'operational pause' that was meant to give the reconciliatory forces a chance, but declared that it 'must not be taken for a concession to the militants'.

Apparently the Taliban has tried to make a deal with Kayani. We'll know the results not from statements, but from the actual deployments of Pakistan's armed forces.

Damn right, send in a couple of battalions of ssg and wipe the floor with their beards!

This is the duplicity of Pakistan, where one hand creates a peace-deal, where the other hand is talking about time needed to reconcil. What is what?

I now have a lot more sympathy for how the Russians behaved in WWII. Despite the declaration of war upon Germany by the Allies, the Russians never believed that they were actually serious about removing the Nazis - who in common with the Allied leaders were firm anti-Communists - from power until the Allies fully exposed their troops by a massive and determined invasion of northwest Europe.

I doubt we in the West will believe much of what Pakistani leaders have to say until they make a similar firm commitment of Pakistan's armed forces to defeating terrorism.

Off topic but the Soviets had an excellent point, given the number of people they lost and were losing.

I see, so the army is capable and capability is not the problem -- so what is? That Mr. Gen. Kiyani has specirfically included "under a democratic dispensation" in his statement, is he signaling that he is awaiting order and will recieve them positively or is he suggesting that he can play politics as well as the politicans? Maybe like a giant game of chicken with Pakistan as the bet? Or is that the army unwillingness is a political signal to both internal and external stockholders who may want to consider whether Mr. Zardari needs a rest and the brothers Sharifov, a third try at raiding the treasury?

Should we soon see the brothers in govt? well, you know what Nawz is demanding - first he got his CJ, now he wants Pakistan to give him absolute power, and when he gets that, he will destabilize the govt further followed by elections in which he will be victorious not still not afford a majority that will allow him to crown himself the Amir ul momineen - don't be suprised to see Jamaatis and Ulema Islam oifering him full support -- he will be supported by the U.S. but they don't really have a choice, they have an exagerated sense of their power and he will use this to sideline them -- they will respond by assasinating him. Leaving which option? Well, it's khiali palau, but recall you read it here first.

"...he will be supported by the U.S. but they don't really have a choice, they have an exagerated sense of their power and he will use this to sideline them..."

How exaggerated is our sense of power and in what manner, if I may ask, shall we expect this adroit exploitation?

Thanks.

Why is Kayani speaking like some congress party guy? The statements are so so familiar to us who hear such stuff from our politicians whenever there is some issue, where they are expected to produce results but we know and they know they wont be doing anything other than talk big.

The more precarious the situation the less the ability of the U.S to influence events on the ground - money will not solve this difficulty only significantly larger numbers and types of assets willing to act on the ground can allow U.S to exert influence.

Earlier we talked about Menshiviks, what if the situation does drift towards giving Nawaz what he wants in return for a so called "national government" and what if after flirting for as about 6 to 8 months with peace deals and their failure, a vote of confidence is brought in Majlis, will Mr. Zardari survive? In my opinion, no.

Mr. Sharif are bought and paid for by interests at odds with U.S interests and pathologically sectarian - Mr. Nawz Sharif has atrack record, I encourage you to familiarize yourself with his track record, there has not been a single instance where he has not bitten the hand that fed him.

Kayani gave a long speech, this is just one journalist's quotations from a 30 minute plust speech.

He said many good things, will try and find the speech online.
