MiG 27 crashes into Bengal village, 1 killed


alpaiguri: A MiG 27 fighter aircraft belonging to Indian Air Force crashed at Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal at around 11.00 am on Saturday killing one person.

According to reports, the crash occurred at Chorpakhi village which falls under Maynaguri Police Station's jurisdiction in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

The fighter jet crashed on the village destroying 4 houses and injuring a dozen villagers. Many of them are believed to be seriously injured.


They have been rushed to the Mayanguri hospital. Three children and one woman are among the injured. Unconfirmed reports also say that one person has died in the crash.

As far as the fate of the pilot flying the aircraft is concerned, he is believed to have ejected safely.

JALPAIGURI: A MiG-27 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force on Saturday crashed in a field, killing one person on the ground and injuring 25 others, five of them critically, at Bhotputti village in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

The pilot, Saket Verma, ejected from the aircraft but was injured and has been hospitalised, superintendent of police Anand Kumar said.

Inspector general of police (north Bengal) Ranveer Kumar said that a farmer, B Rai, who was cultivating his field was killed when the MIG crashed between Moynaguri and Chengrabandha.

The SP said that 25 people were injured when the aircraft crashed, of whom 5 were in a serious condition.

An IAF spokesperson said in New Delhi that the MiG-27 took off from the Hashimara Air Base on a routine sortie and crashed within minutes of take-off.

The mishap took place around 10:30am at a place around 25 km away from the Hashimara base.

That means nothing, at one point in 1988 23 F-16's crashes, but last year only 3 crashed (all air forces). Sometimes there are long stretches with no crashes and other times there are fluries of crashes, this holds true for all aircraft, btw i chose the F-16 because the US keeps good records, and not because i think its bad or unsafe. I beleive the IAF crashes 6-7 aircraft per 100,000 hr at least according to some Indian sources, while some sources say the US crash rate is only 3-4 per 100,000, perhaps much lower, and the US air force is one of the safest, so yes the IAF record is poor; however, much of the crashes have nothing to due with the aircraft it self.


The problem is a lack of IAF trainers, no other airforce that operates Mig's has had as many crashes as the Indians. Better training and better maintenance will do wonders. Outside of poor pilots training and poor maintenance, bird strikes are common, Russia has also blamed Indian made spares parts for a number of the crashes.

Time to retire Mig-21's; the Mig-29's have a solid record, of course much of the IAF crashes are due to pilot error so...

The mig29 has one of the worst safety record of any bird ever flown.

Over 160 crashed and burned and still counting, make that 161.

It is the first time a country, India, opted out of buying a plane because so many were cashing. Investigation showed it has an inherent corrosion issue in the AL processing. Not good for a bird.

Mig29 the winner?

Only if you want to win a seat in heaven.

If that does not sway you, let's look at the kills between the two.

The F18 has more kills than any other modern aircraft.

How many does the Mig29 have?

Moreover, F18's have killed Migs wholesale.

How is this related to the topic? This is a thread on MiG-27, not on MiG-29 or F-18 or corruption in India. Please stop trolling.

BTW, since you seem to like wikipedia, why not look into the MiG-29 article? You will find that MiG-29s have a solid record with the Indian Air Force and they have been used quite effectively in the Kargil war. MiG-29s were lost mainly by ill-trained Iraqi pilots.

I want a source for that, btw smart one, there has been over 339 class A crashes and 81 class B crashes for the F-16.

What is your point? You act like corrosion and structural problems are unique to Russian aircraft well an F-15's broke apart in mid air not too long ago.

Bull! The F-18 has 2 Mig-21 kills while being killed by a Mig-25.

There has been a number of exercises between F-18's and Mig-29's where the Mig got the best of the F-18, everyone knows the Iraqis were at best a joke.

Actually, Russia has blamed the spare parts that India imported from CIS countries to be responsible for several of the past crashes.

Nevertheless, IAF will have to continue with the 23's/27's at least for next 3-5 years before other planes start taking their places. There is no escape here.

IAF's MiG-23s have been phased out. only MiG-27s are still in service.
