What's new

MI 17 Replacement in future.

People do realize that the heli that crashed in Chitral was an Mi-17V5.

Secondly, bad weather CFIT could crash a brand new Blackhawk just as same as a 25 year old Mi-17.

Thirdly, Pakistan's first MI-17 batch came from Russia in 1996 if I am not wrong. (@Oscar, any idea?). This is because I have been seeing some figures of 30 year old helis being floated around.

It would be much more cheaper to send the Helos to Russia or other Ex-Soviet country for Upgrades

In the past we did that .., but now Pak has opened an overhauling facility for MI helis with cooperation from St Petersberg workshop...

..

@Super Falcon. Pak Army Aviation has being flying MIs since decades ... The helicopter which crashed this week was the new V5 variant modified to carry extra fuel... It crashed due to the extreme weather...

We do to 4 ex warsaw pact countries but we have a new repair and maintenance facility for Mi17 at Qasim.

Once the economy improves, there will definitely be new procurements but I don't think they will be replaced at the moment.

They've come from different sources
Soviets
Ukraine
Russia
US buying from eastern Europe countries
Mi8 / 17 history dates back to 1968-69 nearly 50 years now. That's why the army is reliant on this platform.

Z 18 is one option but reliability of Chinese engine is still a big question mark. Certainly Russian engines are more reliable than Chinese but slightly less reliable than western power plants in terms of hours used before overhaul.

Our Mi 17s have been used for a multitude of roles in the last 15 years
WOT
Floods
VVIP and there will be accidents but overall the platform has been very versatile and reliable

Western helos will always be more expensive than Mi17 esp in the med lift category.

MI-17 is a good heli but Pak army definitely should look for better options in future (all depends on money available). One more thing to think about is that not only Pakistan in recent months has problems with russian helicopters but even in Russia there are lots of crashes and they can not blame weather.

Ofcourse worldwide they have been in the role for around 40 odd years..but I was talking specifically Pakistani service.

We could wait till the z-20. An exact copy of the Blackhawk

These cannot replace the Mi-17!
These are two completely different machines for totally different roles. For reference, the Mi-17 have appx 4000 Kg internal cargo carrying capacity compared to ONLY 12oo Kg of Black Hawk (an relatively similar capacity of this Z-20)
So while i anxiously wait for Z-20 platform to mature and hope that PAA do buy these in numbers, i am sure these wont come as replacement of Mi-17 as they cannot offer what Mi-17 does for us.

Sorry Mr. Fatman17, every time a Mi17 crashed its dififcult to defend him. Its passed technolgy, old project. Pak Army allready as a good medium machine B412 and a good cheap light machine Ecurreuil, you need a heavier Helicopter, that could take a full rifle Platoon and operate on all weather with state of the art technology. You need EH101.
Most of the missions nade by Mi17 can be made by B412, you only need more and they are avaiable. Its a safe Chopper, its escorting AH1 Cobras with MGs and Rifleman. When you need to carry a heavier load or more troops you will use the EH101. If Portugal is a poor country and have 12 of these machines, Pak army can get at least 24-36 and buy medium and light helicopters! Dont go to work every day in a truck, use a SMART!
