Mechuka – The Untouched Paradise on Earth
Mechuka is a small hamlet cuddled up 6,000 feet above sea level in the Mechuka Valley in West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh, India. This picturesque Valley is about 29 km from Indo-Tibet border and around 500 km from the state capital Itanagar. It is one of the most picturesque destinations in the state. The nearest big town Along, which is a major tourist hub is approx 180 km from Mechuka. This place of Arunachal Pradesh is known for both its religious and historical significance.
Mechuka is also known as Menchuka, which is made of three words: “Men” means "medicinal", “Chu” means "water" and “Kha” means "ice" in local language. The melted water flows here from the snow capped peak is believed to have medicinal values.
The place is a paradise on earth with untouched natural beauties. Due to its mesmerizing landscapes, exotic tribes, natural beautiful lake, snow-capped mountains and Siyom River or Yargyap Chu (local name), this place is gradually becoming a popular tourist destination in Arunachal Pradesh. The Siyom River flows through Mechuka also provide a spectacular view in the valley. The main habitants of Mechuka Valley are the people of the Memba, Ramo, Bokar and Libo tribes.
Arunachal Government decided to open up this place to tourists from 2008.
Attractions:
The prime tourist attractions are Samten Yongcha monastery, Mechuka Lake, High hills, snow-capped mountains and River Siyom.
Samten Yongcha monastery: It is a 400-year-old Buddhist Monastery located at a hilltop in the western edge of Mechuka. Numerous ancient statues can also be found here. It is a contemporary of the famous and much revered Tawang Monastery.
Mechuka Lake: It is a natural lake situated at high altitude with scenic surroundings.
Trekking and hiking on the high mountains, rafting and angling in River Siyom are the main activities that tourist can enjoy at Mechuka. There are a number of unexplored trails that one can venture into. Camping in the forests is another exciting attribute of this place.
The local crafts of Mechuka are also a worth seeing. The Bamboo and Cane Handicrafts such as baskets, lamp shades, cane caps, head gears, cane chair, cane table, cane racks, cane cradle, cane murrah, Designer Cane Tray etc. By carving on wood they make Human figures, toys, animal statues and decorative items. Tibetan crafts such as Thangka paintings, Tibetan shawls etc. are also found here.
Best time to visit:
Mechuka can be visited throughout the year. Due to its proximity to great Himalayan mountain ranges, the weather of this place always remains pleasing. Great views of snow-clad mountains and snow fall can be seen during winter season.
How to Reach:
By Air:
The nearest airport to Mechuka is Mohanbari Airport in Dibrugarh, Assam which is about 385 km from Mechuka. The Lilabari Airport in the Lakhimpur district in Assam is about 420 km from Mechuka. The nearest international airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, Assam which is about 800 km from Mechuka. From the airport, tourists can hire a taxi/cab.
By Rail:
The nearest railway station to Mechuka is Simen Chapari station of Assam, which is about 134 km from Mechuka. Silapathar Station in Assam is about 325 km from Mechuka. Tinsukia and Dibrugarh stations of Assam are about 400 km and 370 km respectively from Mechuka. From the station, tourists can hire a cab or a bus to reach Mechuka.
By Road:
Mechuka is well connected to the neighboring towns by roads. To enjoy the scenic beauty of the country side tourist have to board a bus from Along or hire a taxi to reach Mechuka. If travelling by own vehicle, SUV is the ideal mode to reach Mechuka. Since it is hard to find a fuel station on the way to Mechuka, sufficient fuel should be stored in the vehicle.

From Guwahati one has to reach Itanagar, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh and from there they can take a cab/jeep/sumo to Mechuka. Itanagar can be reached by bus, air or hired cars.
