Its called strategic relationships. The US will always maintain good relationships with both, India and Pakistan. India is also one of the largest trade partners, so she has more say and lobby in the US. This is an "act of balance" I think.

The POTUS wanted to sell 8 jets to Pakistan as it made sense. Thinking 8 jets could do any harm to India, is a misconception as they have fielded aout 300 top line jets aroun the Pakistani border, which is a much more potent and larger force.

In normal times, you're right and it will be a question of balancing and fine tuning. In case of Pakistan however, unfortunately it's been not balancing with India but rather balancing the carrot and stick. Lately it's been mostly stick but with Sherieff in the 'hospital' for months, I guess some greased palms in the Pak military look to offer services for some moolah. $900M isn't shabby

This $900 million has more strings attached to it than ever, and Congress attach more every year. It also reduces the amount every year. So what's the purpose of this visit by US Senators? Are they going to listen to Pakistan's concerns about India?

No. They are in Pakistan to remind the government and military who has leverage over whom. Has any of these Senators condemn the drone strike that killed Mansoor?

It's all a dog and pony show.

on further thought I'd even go a bit further - the times of 'balancing India and Pakistan' are a thing of the past. It is more like balancing India and China.Af-Pak may be

Are you stating an official US government position or your personal sentiment? This isn't the Twitter, so personal sentiments don't count :enjoy:.

For any official US administration position, please post appropriate links. Personal opinions, feel good or hatred, don't count in such complex discussions. Thanks.

The official position is being changed formally (it has already happened informally but precisely for your kind of questions, our great administration has finally learnt that there is a process). While McCain's won't be the only view, he is one of the votes in the room on the matter. If he likes what hears and sees from your generals thumbs up, otherwise down (from his perspective, others can still override).

A big factor in this change has nothing to do with McCain or his visit or the show he is given by Pak generals. The administration is very curious about the terms of reference (including parties involved) in the heart attack agreement.

Nice, so....you are a spokesman for the US government? Please establish credentials. Otherwise, please write nonsense elsewhere.

The Republican Party has always warmed up to Pakistan. It's the Democrats that have a problem with Pakistan.

i cant believe this. in angola, we were being 'guided' by US and Cubans/angolas by Russians. In finality, there was a 'indirect' talks facilitated by US/Russians - it was pathetic and there was no diligence as they were not on the ground. Give credit to our FM Pik botha ran into his Cuban counterpart and sat with him on the hotel bar and said what is it you want so that you walk away victorious and what we want to walk away victorious. 2 hours over drinks. done and klaar as we say it. Next day's meeting, Shultz and Shevednazde expected talks to continue, our FM walked with the Cubans and said no more talks. The reactions was 'without us'. Yes, we walked away and we are great friends till today.

Pakistan needs to come up and be a man's man and get their priorties in line; make peace 360 deg and the rest will come in line. Unless this mentality of master nod's being right is not remediated, the status quo is going to continue
