Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday announced that the state Cabinet has decided in the favour of division of the state into four new states.

Addressing a press conference here, Mayawati said that the state government would formally move a motion for the same in the state Assembly when it meets on November 21.

She said that the state should be divided into four new four states – Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Paschim Pradesh.

Purvanchal comprises of 22 eastern districts of the state including Gorakhpur and Balia. The current capital Lucknow would fall in Awadh Pradesh which comprises of 14 districts.

Bundelkhand has seven districts including Jhansi, while Paschim Pradesh would have 22 districts comprising Meerut, Ghaziabad and Gutam Buddh Nagar among others.

Pitching strongly for the division of the state, Mayawati said that UP is the most populous state and for better development and administration, it is necessary that the state be reorganised into four different states.

However, she put the ball in Congress-led Central government's court saying that as per the Constitution it is the Parliament which has to pass a resolution approving the division of the state.

A political masterstroke by Mayawatiji?

i agree with Mayawati that UP should be divided up its simply too over populated and the BJP policy of carving out smaller states of bigger states for better governance and development has shown good results the smaller states would then be easier to govern and easier to develop however i really dislike Mayawati and how she has ruled UP her gov't has been accused of murdering innocent farmers that launched protests not only that rather than spend money on development and betterment of the poor she uses state funds to make Dalit statues and parks dedicated to Dalits

use of federal and state funds should be either on 1) benefits for the population like healthcare, welfare including infrastructure development etc or 2) spent on corporations and businesses

a country like India should be fiscally liberal with a tax supported system

She wants to remain in power atleast in one state.... cause going by the history of election results of UP since independence, no party has come to power for the second time in a row !!

the BJP must take control of U.P and modernize/urbanize it so that it can turn out to be like Gujarat but even better since UP agricultural input is higher

Well its a slap to Rahul Baba..whose big mouth caused this decision. Rahul baba said in a stage that Central funds are disapperaring in UP, in return Mayawati said that if thats the case divide the UP into 4 small states. Now Centre/Congress is in a fix. Divide the state, and be prepared to face the demand of other states like Telegana, Gorkhaland etc OR not divide the state and be called 'anti-development'. Damned if you do, damned if you not!!

Its a reminder to Rahul baba that he have to learn a lot about 'Rajneeti' and Mayawati is the undisputed queen of that field.

BJP was in control of UP before...What happened?

A much needed move. UP's problems are compounded due to its size. The best governed and the most developed states in India are inadvertently the smaller ones.

However this division might create two extremes - Harit Pradesh with its rich agricultural output and industry near Delhi will be amongst India's richest states, whereas Bundelkhand and Purvanchal may end up as basket cases.

it's not about taking control but to win elections... and going by the trend... it will be a fight between SP and BSP with congress chipping in with some brownie seats here and there.. BJP can't win as much to form a govt in UP !!

You are talking as if BJP has a magic wand of development! There are a lot of other things that matter apart from the party in power.

As I said, there are a lot of things that matter apart from the party in power. What about the global economy? A strong global demand will fuel internal economy. I dont think NDA saw a recession.

the recession has since ended and yet today growth rates are decreasing and inflation has increased in the country this is a serious threat to the Indian economic growth if we are to seriously progress we must obtain double digit GDP growth and be able to sustain it for a long period of time

I think it will be a good thing if that happens. we can at least identify the places that are doing bad and efforts could be made to improve them. Same is the case with Maharashtra. It is the richest state in India. But it has some of the poorest districts with high rate of malnutrition and farmer suicides.

Tell that to the EU!

Absolutely. I believe Vidharbha has been crying out for statehood for a long time. Inspite of being rich in resources, it languishes in development metrics and is plagued by farmer suicides.

Tell that to the EU!

but we are not the EU!!! my point is that urbanization and modernization of the country as a whole is required what have we seen with Khangress? corruption, nepotism, and not to mention a lack of strength to stand up for the nation when it is has been attacked by state sponsored actors the BJP is not perfect either and they are corrupt as well but they are willing to pass a strong and effective lokpal with teeth

Gujarat is a fine example of the BJP governance look how prosperous the state has become over a time of 10 years
