Admiral DK Joshi, Chief of Naval Staff on Monday said that maritime power is vital for safeguarding maritime interests. Joshi delivered the Gen B C Joshi lecture on ‘Indian Navy-Maritime Power for National Prosperity’ at the PUMBA Auditorium, University of Pune.

He stated that security today depends on a combination of many diverse but inter-related factors centred on economic prosperity and social development. Elaborating on the prevailing security environment he said that regional and global balances are shifting rapidly. “This has given considerable room to regional and middle powers to manoeuvre. It is in this paradigm that the Navy seeks to provide a secure environment where the nation’s needs for socio-economic growth and prosperity are adequately addressed,” Joshi said.

The Chief of Naval Staff said that concepts of ‘national security’ and ‘national power’ have evolved with the dynamics of geo-politics and national priorities. With globalization and economic integration, security is no longer synonymous with the defence of territorial integrity. He said national power is no longer military centric.

“Ideas like ‘Comprehensive Security’ and ‘Comprehensive National Strength’ have gained currency. It is in this context that Navy as a maritime power contributing to the nation’s quest for prosperity needs to be viewed. A strong and versatile Navy not only safeguards territory, but also enables creation of a peaceful periphery to facilitate socio-economic growth,” he said.

The Admiral gave glowing examples of the rich maritime history of the nation ranging from Vedic times to the modern times.

He also touched upon the anti-piracy operations in the Northern Indian Ocean. Joshi also said the Navy has contributed immensely in relief and rescue operations, including the recent crisis in Uttarakhand. The safety and well-being of Indians residing around the globe is also of concern to the Navy, he said.
