Many Chinese consumers ready to boycott US goods in trade war
Survey highlights risks in dispute with Trump but Beijing aware of danger of backlash
JAMES KYNGE

A survey found that 54 per cent of 2,000 respondents in 300 cities across China would “probably” or “definitely” stop buying US-branded goods “in the event of a trade war”.

A majority of Chinese consumers would be prepared to boycott US goods in the event of a trade war with Washington, a survey has found, signalling the high stakes in the escalating trade conflict between the two countries.

The survey found that 54 per cent of 2,000 respondents in 300 cities across China would “probably” or “definitely” stop buying US-branded goods “in the event of a trade war”. Just 13 per cent said they would not. The remaining 33 per cent said they were unsure or did not at present buy US branded goods, according to the survey, conducted for FT Confidential Research (FTCR), a research unit at the Financial Times.

The survey was carried out between June 27 and July 10, mostly before the US imposed 25 per cent tariffs on $34bn of Chinese goods on July 6. The move elicited an immediate tit-for-tat response from Beijing.

To date, China has avoided calling for any boycott of US goods. Analysts said Beijing was unlikely to do so because of fears over a backlash. “The Chinese authorities haven’t done anything like they did with Japan and South Korean goods in the past,” said Kent Kedl, senior partner in the Shanghai office at Control Risks, a risk consultancy.

“Beijing is going to be very careful. They know that the repercussions all over the world would be very unpredictable,” Mr Kedl added. South Korean-Chinese trade was badly hit last year after China’s state-run media called for a boycott of goods and services because of Seoul’s decision to install a US-made anti-missile system.

South Korea’s government estimates that the country lost $6.8bn in tourism receipts alone as Chinese middle-class travellers stayed away. Car sales by Korean manufacturers in China were also badly hit.

Japanese car exports also tumbled 32 per cent in the 12 months after China launched a boycott over disputed islands in September 2012. But Sima Pingbang, a blogger on Chinese social media, said the current US-China trade tensions were being covered in a less provocative fashion by state media.

“The main reason is that the US has a really big impact on China and the impact is ten times bigger than that by Korea,” he said. “The US influences Chinese ideology, China’s economy and it also affects lots of people’s personal interests.”

The FTCR survey found that the consumers most likely to shun US products were those on lower middle incomes, aged 25-29, and living outside large metropolitan centres and provincial capitals.

tbh most Chinese have little idea abt the ongoing trade war.. many cannot even differentiate a US brand from other brands.

.
Thing is, there are probably more American would boycott Chinese product if and when there is a trade war, and with a Trade Surplus, American boycotting China would have more impact to China boycotting America.

On the other hand, if you ask the same people in this survey to identify American product, chances are they cannot pick out any company other than the really big name (like McDonald or KFC) even so, these company are operated locally with Chinese Owner, boycotting them would only hurt the Chinese, not the American.

.
Make it so, boycott US products! Chinese media can easily educate/advise Chinese consumers to avoid buying US goods and services.

Boycotting US brands would play right into Trump's ultimate goal of moving US manufacturing out of China. All it takes is a retaliatory campaign for people to check the bottom of goods for the "Made in China" label and US (and European) companies would be forced to move operations out of China...which is exactly what Trump wants.

China will boycott services instead or cause a health scare at Starbucks.

In short time, maybe hurt, in long time, not.

Market is here, Alternatives are happy to occupy the markets: Coco, Pepsi, Boeing, P&G, Ford, GM, Apple, HP, Dell, McDonald and KFC, Cartel etc.

I have read a report, the whole revenue of American company in China is about 600 billion dollars, maybe more, you can levy the more tax on goods from China, we can reduce the share American company take in China. Of course many goods from China also belong to American brand.

I also like the trade war, big challenge, also a big opportunity for Chinese company and government, to us, let me know, American and its company can't be believed and should be avoid to used, at least need alternatives, can't be main supplier, national policy.

it is not equal contest , uncle sam is favorite here .

you boycott US goods but not services
Will be influenced lastly, goods is base, The trade war and ZTE affair make all Chinese and Chinese companies know what we should do, like Yinhe affair, attack on China's embassy in Yugoslavia, China-US military plane collision, stimulate China and Chinese.

USA want to be greater, China too, USA need specific enemy, China will be competent one.

Before Korea war, most people thought so, do you know why China culture can exist for more than 5000 years continuously, we like creating "miracles", in fact, USA is not the biggest threat to us comparing with other enemies.

This seems like a phenomenon similar in other countries. Those living outside of the bigger cities or less prosperous region tend to be more nationalistic and protectionist in their world view.

You know what you claim you can do can be, and will be reciprocated, which mean if you shut American company in China down, again, most of them are owned and operated by local Chinese, American WILL shut Chinese company down, 500 billions is not a lot of money, think about if Alibaba was shut down in NYSE where it gone public? Stock value alone you will lose around 500 billions (Alibaba worth 494 billions in NYSE)

And then you also need to put into consideration that US will pressure their allies to pull out funding in China, then China will also lost the "alternative"

If Chinese government do what you said, you will play into Trump hand, you will only lose this trade war faster because China WILL become isolated once again. That is why we can see how the Trade War is actually go. China have to agree to amend their national ownership policy to please the EU in order for them to invest, and if this goes further, I would not say China will lose this trade war, as there aren't actually no winner in a Trade War, but China would suffer more than America, and that is for sure.

Probably won't even have that.

It wouldn't touch on that deep and cause Starbucks problem, if I have to say, the "copycat" Starbucks would probably give Starbucks more of a headache than the trade War.

I’m begining to think triggering a boycott of US goods by Chinese citizens was the whole reason for this Trade War. He can then start a “Dump Made in China” campaign by saying “he didn’t start it...China did”.

He’s going to use their own nationalism against them.

..and don’t think the idea of organizing a nationwide boycott hasn’t crossed his mind

I said shut American company in China? of course, if at last we have to forced by you, all-out trade war. I said reduce the share in china took by American companies and brand. You talk to me these company are owned and operated by Chinese, of course, for them, boss is you, but market is still there, your share decrease, they can choose another boss, market is there, jobs still there, money is still there, the difference for them is short-term pain and new boss or be boss, you can't benefit from the market.

You can shut down Alibaba in NYSE, most of shareholder are not Chinese, Alibaba's base is in China, its market also in China, they can choose to public in China too, or other stock exchange.

The alternative is not only American or other foreign companies, you need know that, including Chinese companies, Chinese IQ is low? and you are confident that your allies will follow you completely? you are not their god, but market and money, hehe,

In the trade war, the winner is the one who can last to end, it is USA that carry out trade protectionism, not China, China will not isolate ourself, but you want Isolate China to the world, or say to USA market, although China company always not enjoy the USA market, 350 million population market is huge, but the rest is much more huger, China market can cultivate enough good companies.

American enjoy China market, China enjoy the jobs of making goods ship to USA, you are too greedy, want both, hehe, so now, why not let American company get out of China? as jobs in China, who feed Chinese? China market, shift the jobs of low low-end product to other domains? Hear that, more than about 90% chips are imported, it is huge, how many jobs can be created in the domain and related industries? P&G, Apple, GM, Qualcomm and many other companies make so much money in China market, they are not replaced? seller can be replaced, but China market can't be, of course, you can go and foster Indian market, hehe.

Before, because of the competition, the American have first mover advantage, there are small market for Chinese companies, can't get enough money for R&D, now, you give them chance. Comparing with the direct and short term influence to China, I concern on the by-effect of trade war and ZTE affair to Chinese and Chinese companies(Government and China market): American and American companies are not believed, better not to choose their products.

Trade war is excuse, but you want to interrupt, even stop development of China, why? you are scared.
