Mangalore college bans burqa in class

Fact 1: Neither Burka nor Hijab (headcover) is any requirement in Islam. Quran, in no way, mandates them.

2: Majority of muslim women do not wear them

3: Those who do are coerced or forced by family

4: Those who do would stop wearing at the first chance they get.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

My personal opinion (and I'm a Muslim) is that Burka and Headcover should be banned in all Islamic and Non Islamic countries except in Arabian peninsula as it is a part of Arab culture. This is by encouraging people to actually read what is written in the Quran rather than following extremist religious scholars blindly.

I don't like the Burqa any more than you do...perhaps even less but those are some sweeping, presumptuous statements !

Fact 1 is backed by Quranic evidence. You or anybody can actually study the quran to see where burka or headscarf is made mandatory.

Fact 2 is based on my personal observation across many muslim countries. I think it is true in pakistan too.

Fact 3 and 4 are based on surveys, I lost their link but I'll post them soon.

What really pisses me off is that we have a few mullahs trying to spread this arab culture to countries that never did this kinda stuff before. In our local mosque we've started to see Bengali girls starting to wear the burka. I asked them why do they wear it and they say because it's dictated in the Quran. Next time I see them I'm going to confront them and ask where in the Quran does it say that.

Let Muslim women wear whatever they want , but if so let them not go to normal schools and get educated.

They can get self taught at home and marry a 40 year old at 14 years of age.

why cause unnecessary controversies in schools and colleges, when everyone else is okay with it?

St Aloysius mangalore has always been a college with difference. Was a symbol of prestige, discipline & excellent education. Standard has fallen off late. They have had an excellent uniform dress code, which had gone for a toss off late. Good to see that the effort is being made to go back to the glory days.

You loads need to go through Quran where Allah SWT Says to women to coverup when leaving homes. Go study first rather then confronting strangers.

Cover everything but their eyes? Show me the passage.

So, Women and "Female Humans" are considered as "uncovered meat" by some radicals. is it ingrained?
truely medieval. no place for this tent/shuttlecock in 21st century- Frank answer.

The way these people's brains work is insane. "If you dont wear a burka you will be raped because the sight of you will be too much for a man to resist."

My response to that would be to the girl please get over yourself.

Religion is Interpretation...nothing more ! So FACT 1 may not be that certain...when the Quran talks about women covering themselves up and Muslim men lowering their gaze...one might interpret that in various ways. The women in my family use only, what we call in the Subcontinent, a 'Dupatta' to cover themselves up...if need be, for that is their interpretation of that. However other more, what I'd call, stringent interpretations do exist and unless they pose a serious security threat then let them wear whatever they think conforms to their understanding of religion !

And Facts 3 & 4 are indeed presumptuous because I've known countless women here in Pakistan who wear the Burqa as per their personal choice and not out of coercion ! And yes...coercion does exist and should be dealt with strongly wherever its found !

Not really. Indeed God knows the truth. But interpretation is within a set limit. Interpretation does not mean that you make a mole out of a hill. There are set limits and bounds to interpretation and the Quran explicitly instructs us to not transgress (in this case, extrapolate the meanings of verses)

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

It is their personal choice because it has become a habit of them since childhood. If you are forced to wear burka since teenage, it will automatically become your "choice" (habitual) when you grow up to be a woman?

And yes, the survey was for teenagers. So, it is not a presumptuous statement.
