KOLKATA, JAN 18: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed deep anguish and indignation at the Border Security Force (BSF)’s wanton firings on the Indo-Bangladesh border. In a scathing criticism of the BSF’s role on the border, she warned that her government had taken strong exception to the trigger-happy actions of the Indian border guard personnel.

It is reported that she lodged a written protest note to the federal home ministry about the recent firing incident at Hili in Dakshin Dinajpur on 2 January when an Indian was reported to have been killed in BSF firings. She also drew attention of the central home ministry to the 16 killings in BSF firings during last six months. She reportedly asked the concerned home ministry authorities to take appropriate steps to stop this type of firings on the border by the BSF.

Giving this information to newsmen at the Writers’ Buildings on Thursday, the state home department secretary Basudeb Banerjee said that the chief minister’s protest letter on BSF firings was forwarded to the central home ministry recently. Refusing to part with a copy of the letter, he said that the state government was in touch with the authorities of the BSF (South Bengal) for the redressal of the chief minister’s grievances on the BSF role on the border.

He however declined to elaborate further the tenor and content of discussion with the BSF high-ups. Meanwhile, the additional director general of the BSF (South Bengal) B D Sharma asserted that faced with joint attacks of Indian and Bangladeshi criminals – mainly cattle-smugglers – on the border, the BSF was generally forced to resort to firings as self defense measures. Giving statistics, he said that during last six months, altogether 26 smugglers – 13 Indians and 13 Bangladeshis – lost lives during midnight firings.

At the same time, he claimed that smugglers killed 2 BSF jawans and injured 201 officers and jawans during this period. Sharma explained the modus operandi of BSF

action on the border while dealing with cross-border criminal activities.

He explained that before resorting to firings, BSF first applied ‘stun gun’, and the lob ‘tear-gas shells’ and ‘pump-action gun’ to disperse the law-breakers on the border. If all these measures failed to disperse the attacking smugglers, BSF then felt compelled to open fire. The BSF ADG also asserted that because of restraint on the part of BSF, the border firings were reduced substantially in 2012 (26 dead in firings) in comparison to over 100
in 2011.
He disclosed that in a recent bi-partite meeting with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), it was agreed that in dealing with border criminals, non-lethal weapons would be used. Queried about the displeasures of the state chief minister, he said that they had sought an appointment with the CM to explain the BSF stand on the issue.

The bolded part says it all. As much as the BD members accuse us of killing BD innocents, actually it is not so simple. BSF only fires at smugglers/ traffikkers/ illegal crossings. That is their job and thats what they are supposed to do. While firing, they don't haave goggles like 'Night Vision' ones to identify who is from BD and who is from India.

As far as this rhetoric from Didi is concerned, its more of a political statement than anything else. As if the BSF will shout at these criminals without firing and they will merrily surrender

Well we don't care about indian people .but our people whether smuggler or not must get proper justice. Shoot and kill is not the solution!

BSF does not have the right to shoot or kill anyone unless it is for self defense!I will not deny that there is smuggling in the borders and it is common around the world. But the BSF has killed innocent people in the past and continues to do so to this day.BSF violates international law and are International Terrorists backed by the Indian Government.

The report proves that they are terrorists as the are involved in terrorizing civilians from both countries!

Bangladesh is no Shariah! Its democracy! Here i am talking as a Bangladesh hoisting Bangladeshi flag. Don't try to derail the thread!

But dont you wish for Sharia to be implemented in BD and these dalal awami secular munafiqs done away with ? Consider BSF is dealing out Sharia punishments to these drug smugglers. You should praise them for that.

They are shooting for the self defense dumbo.Tell me does your countries law consider smugglers "innocent people".Smugglers irrespective of their nationality must be stopped even if they by means like this.

even under Shariah death sentenced has to come from a Qazi appointed by Khalif! And no smugglers dont get death sentence in Shariah law! Now stop derailing the thread.

Saudi Arabia awards death for drug smuggling. So yes, I would consider it is punishable by death under Sharia.

Did you just say that an uniformed military organization shoots unarmed smugglers for 'self-defense'??As Tridibans pointed out BSF does not have night vision how do they know who's a smuggler and who's not??Felani was an innocent girl crossing the border to get married and BSF killed her and I can assure you there numerous of such cases! It is actually quite painful to watch people condoning and supporting killing of civilians!

Felani was not supposed to be in India in the first place.

Why dont you guys stay within your country..we within our country so we all live happily together ?

If shooting a smuggler is nota solution please tell what is a solution ? Our courts are already overburdened with cases so adding these cases in the long list is not in our favour. We can't let them carry out illegal activities (smuggling). So shooting them is a sasta, sundar aur tikau solution ( cheap, beautiful and long lasting solution)

Saudi's do a lot of Un-Islamic stuff!Sati Daha was widely practiced in India so should I consider 'becoming a widow' is punishable by death in an inferno under Hinduism?

First of all BSF is a Para-military organization, and their job is to guard our troubled borders.Cracking down smuggling is one of their job.Only logical reason some one illegal crossing into to our side is to do something illegal,if he get killed,Its his/her fault. If some one want to come to India, then apply for a visa don't do paulvaulting.
