The Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal has banned controversial IPS officer Nazrul Islam’s book, Musalmander Ki Karaniya (What Muslims Should Do), in which he has highlighted the alleged plight of Muslims in the state and the “double standard” of the present government in “improving” their condition.

The book, which was released a month ago, has been published by Kolkata-based publisher Mitra and Ghosh.

On Saturday, officials from the Enforcement Branch of Kolkata Police raided the office, sales counter and godown of the publishing house and took away copies of the book.

Islam was not available for comment.

The intellectuals of the state have come out against the government’s move, calling it “draconian”. “We are shocked to know about the state government’s decision of banning the book,” said legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen. Noted littérateur Sunil Gangopadhyay also minced no words to protest the government’s decision. “This cultural policing (by the government) should be condemned by everybody,’’ he said.

The IPS officer, who was an ardent critic of the Left Front government, has penned down several books, a few of them criticising the role of the Marxists in controlling the police. He was censured by the Left Front government at that time and was allegedly denied promotions.

When Mamata Banerjee became Railway Minister, she made him an official of the Railways in charge of safety. But after Trinamool Congress came to power in the state, Mamata made him an officer on Special duty in the Home Department, which he refused.

Thereafter, Islam was made Additional Director General (Training) of West Bengal Police, a post he still holds.

The author received several literary awards and has also set up an engineering college at Domkol in Murshidabad district — his native place. According to reports, the author is planning to move court against the decision of the West Bengal government.

There is no ban of the book. Copies were not confiscated. The officers concerned bought, not seized, five copies. It appears from the responses to media questions that the chief of police may have taken anticipatory action and it is not clear that the chief minister was aware of these actions, far less having ordered them.

Didi is capable of doing incredibly stupid and illegal things. This, regrettably, may not be one of hers.

There is a thing called being royalist than the king.

And her approach to Muslims is sickeningly sycophantic. That is effectively what Nazrul Islam pointed out in his book.

Amazing ... As it is Mamata is highly communal individual who practices vote bank politics ... yet there are folks for whom all the appeasement is insufficient. How low the land of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda has sunk.

I am so sad to say that WB has no future....there were waste lefts and now this arrogant lady...even after having superior human resource; I guess WB is going to lag behind even Bihar in years to come!

Calm down and get the correct news.

Didi is a nut, but not in this case.

aparantly,in this case,Mamata is right..some parts of this book is controversial..he was advocating to build more schools than Madrasa-a move that can hurt minority sentiment.plus he tried to fan some controversies on some hindu leader's perticipation in Iftar Party and their speech..the last thing we need now is another controversy that can anger Muslims..plus,he never complained in left front regime about minority progress, but he expected that Regime change would make minority progress hypersonic, that is not possible..Police did right thing to stop circulating the books..

Are you mad?

Which Bengali Muslim leader wants to build madrassas, instead of schools? He only said that there should be a transition to schools from madrassas, for the sake of Muslim advancement.

What's to object?

Second, he blasted the nauseating habit of going to an Iftar party without having fasted. Nothing wrong with friends being invited home to share. He was pointing at politicians and their vote-bank politics.

Third, he objected to saying Insh'allah and Khuda Hafeez at the same time. He was being very correct in his interpretation, but it is true.

About minority progress under the Left Front, there was considerable movement. Nazrul Sahib just wanted a speeding up.

There was nothing in all this to object to, and it has not been a ban on the books either.

More and more opposition should be made. We are already loosing billions of dollars. Why not strike for 3 days. No one should go to work except the important ones such as doctors.

Or did I fail to detect any sarcasm ?
