What's new

Mamata Banerjee had an accident

I think the BJP will claim that this incident was Mamata's own doing to gain sympathy vote.

Well, Bengal is not a state that appears to have keen interest in my region of Deccan. And this would be I think the case of other Western, Southern and Northern states too.

Though the Communists I think are also part of the Bengal election so the communists in other places in India will keep a keen interest here.

It would be sad if the bhodralok were not to vote for Mamata and the leftists en masse.

As for the second paragraph I think our BD brothers @Bilal9 and @DalalErMaNodi will possibly have a better insight.

It is remarkable how Bengali nationalism in India ( will repeat in India ) morphs over the era.

A few Wikifacts on Kolkata:
Calcutta or Kolkata today is home to 9,600 millionaires and 4 billionaires with a total wealth of $290 billion and is the third-largest urban economy of India.
In 1793 the East India company was strong enough to abolish rule, and assumed full sovereignty of the region. Under the company rule and later under the British Raj, Calcutta served as the capital of British-held territories in India until 1911, when its perceived geographical disadvantages, combined with growing nationalism in Bengal, led to a shift of the capital to New Delhi..
In fact even Burma ( Myanmar) was controlled from Calcutta.

Returning to Bengali Nationalism ( Indian) we had freedom fighters ( biplobi ) like Binay Badal and Dinesh and Bagha Jotin pre-independence. During the late independence struggle there was Subhas Bose, Then there was the peaceful period of Dr. B.C. Roy.
From 1969-1970 there was the elite Siddartha Shankar Ray during whose time the feared Sarboharas like Charu Majumdar, Kanu Sanyal, Jongal Santhal, Ajijul Hoque raised the slogan:
Amar bari tomar bari
Naxalbari
! Naxalbari !
(Trans: My and your home Naxalbari).

The China connection was made by the slogan :

Amar Chairman, Chairman Mao !
( Trans: Chairman Mao is our Chairman! )

Slogans daubed with the hammer and sickle logo on the walls of the
upzilla offices in the Doars area, the coalfields of Ranigunj.
The Sarboharas controlled the coalfields, tea gardens and university campuses of Jadavapur, Calcutta, and Durgapur. The Calcutta coffee shop was filled with starry eyed unshaven Marxists in khadi kurta pajamas carrying a jhola and smoking one rupee a packet Charminar cigarettes discussing quantum mechanics and revolution in the same breath.
Raising a clenched fist they would sing.
"Jago Jago Jago Sarbohara "
( Trans: Those who have nothing left to loose, Arise ! )

Then 1977 brought in Jyoti Basu, Buddhadev Bhattacharya and others. They ruled for 23 years till 2011 before firebrand Didi toppled the CPM forever.
The wheel in West Bengal is turning full circle, With the departure of Didi and Dilip Ghosh's imminent victory, West Bengal will return to its
19th century Bengal Renaissance roots, and will have dumped Center and Left of Center politics forever...

Chants to a rhythm, repetitive, like a drum beat, shouted by a half million strong crowd.

When, US Defense secretary Robert McNamara tried to visit Calcutta in 1970 his plane could not land as a huge crowd has collected outside Dum Dum airport.

Calcutta, renamed two of its streets after Ho Chi Minh and Lenin.

In 1970 , the city and the province was a remarkable blend of eastern mysticism, ( even the Baul songs has developed current themes), western liberalism, and Marxism. The Royal Shakespeare Company performed to packed audiences as did the Soviet House of Culture folk dance ensembles. Robindro Sadan has its choir performances by Runa Guha Thakurtha as well. When Ma

Calcutta is truly the "City of Joy ".It had south asia's first planetarium and first metro, and first race course.

The revolutionary fervor of West Bengal, and it's people has been constant since over one and half centuries. Even as recently as late 2019, Calcutta was racked by anti-CAA protests. Faiz's poem "Hum Dekhenge" ( Trans: We shall see ) was translated into Bengali and sung at university campuses. When the Urdu poet Makhdoom visited Calcutta he was greeted by crowds singing his own song .
" Ye Jung hai Jung e Azaadi.." (Trans: This struggle is for liberty... )

Calcutta is as much a center for Urdu literary excellence as it is for Bengali, with both languages co-existing in harmony side by side. Mamta Bannerjee has no qualms speaking in accented Urdu, and is much loved by Urdu speakers for her efforts. Once Mamta even apologized for her accent admitting she couldn't speak the language well, but was loudly applauded and cheered by the audience. Everything goes in Calcutta, language, religion, and culture.

I hope even as West Bengal politically transforms. It retains it's cultural and revolutionary fervor even though in a religious mold.
A beautiful song Amra Moloyo Batashe sums up the hope ( Link )
"sandhya meghe karibo dukul, indradhanure chandrahar "
tara karibo karner dhul, jarabo gayete andhakar "
Difficult to translate accurately but a very rough translation: Amongst the evening clouds there is the rainbow, which mitigates the darkness.

A Bengali friend of mine told me that I would enjoy the Calcutta adda culture. People sitting in tea house addas and discussing everything over cups of tea for hours.

The song link did not play for me. Maybe my browser is old.

But about your translation, do you speak Bangla or can read it ?

I have question from Bangladeshis here. If Bengal breaks away from India, and they are ready to make Bengal one country, will you guys support this idea?
Please note I am not trolling, and I have 100% neutral mind while asking this question.

There won't be Bangladesh before that happens. Don't waste forum space for your fantasy. Lol.

I hope as Mamata Bannerjee, the last of the revolutionaries goes into history West Bengal will retain its cultural syncretic milieu.

I can neither speak nor read Bengali. When introduced to the literature by friends who translate for me, word by word I can understand songs, poetry and music. West Bengali music and songs , especially the revolutionary music is enchanting and if someone assists you in understanding these songs the experience is even more enjoyable. The best part of Bengali patriotic revolutionary songs ( pre-indepedence ) is that they are secular and emphasize on promoting tolerance and religious harmony. Subtitled movies by Satyajit Ray are wonderful. As a Pakistani it took me awhile to appreciate West Bengali culture, but now I am hooked. Because West Bengalis transition easily from Urdu to Bengali and vice versa (Example : Faiz's poem "Amra Dakhbo " Hum Dekhengay ; Link ), it makes understanding Bengali culture so much easier.

There is a "play" button next to the logo in the link below :
Link. But here is a youtube Link The Youtube version is not as good as the album.

These are two completely different territories with completely different mindsets and viewpoints of their populations. West Bengal is far more than just Bengal.
West Bengal even though a much smaller territory than say neighboring Bihar has a huge impact on the rest of India . There is a reason why the Indian National Anthem is in Bengali.
West Bengal is economically strategic to India with Calcutta alone having an economy of $260 billion. West Bengal's strategic economic assets for India is huge, with coal, steel, heavy engineering, ship building automobile and industrial goods. Agricultural produce such as tea are huge exports and foreign exchange earners. There are several near world class centers of academic excellence such as the engineering institutes. West Bengal is much more than just another Indian province. It is a nerve center of secular Indian nationalism, and progressive Indian thought. If West Bengal goes than it is one more shredding of India's secular fabric and India's descent into madness.

Watching from Pakistan, even I hate to see a culturally vibrant and secular people being manipulated into abandoning their heritage and being converted into a rabid fascist mob.
