I think the BJP will claim that this incident was Mamata's own doing to gain sympathy vote.



Well, Bengal is not a state that appears to have keen interest in my region of Deccan. And this would be I think the case of other Western, Southern and Northern states too.

Though the Communists I think are also part of the Bengal election so the communists in other places in India will keep a keen interest here.



It would be sad if the bhodralok were not to vote for Mamata and the leftists en masse.

As for the second paragraph I think our BD brothers @Bilal9 and @DalalErMaNodi will possibly have a better insight.

When the Urdu poet Makhdoom visited Calcutta he was greeted by crowds singing his own song .
" Ye Jung hai Jung e Azaadi.." (Trans: This struggle is for liberty... )

Calcutta is as much a center for Urdu literary excellence as it is for Bengali, with both languages co-existing in harmony side by side. Mamta Bannerjee has no qualms speaking in accented Urdu, and is much loved by Urdu speakers for her efforts. Once Mamta even apologized for her accent admitting she couldn't speak the language well, but was loudly applauded and cheered by the audience. Everything goes in Calcutta, language, religion, and culture.

I hope even as West Bengal politically transforms. It retains it's cultural and revolutionary fervor even though in a religious mold.

I hope as Mamata Bannerjee, the last of the revolutionaries goes into history West Bengal will retain its cultural syncretic milieu.

I can neither speak nor read Bengali. When introduced to the literature by friends who translate for me, word by word I can understand songs, poetry and music. West Bengali music and songs , especially the revolutionary music is enchanting and if someone assists you in understanding these songs the experience is even more enjoyable. The best part of Bengali patriotic revolutionary songs ( pre-indepedence ) is that they are secular and emphasize on promoting tolerance and religious harmony. Subtitled movies by Satyajit Ray are wonderful. As a Pakistani it took me awhile to appreciate West Bengali culture, but now I am hooked. Because West Bengalis transition easily from Urdu to Bengali and vice versa (Example : Faiz's poem "Amra Dakhbo " Hum Dekhengay ; Link ), it makes understanding Bengali culture so much easier.

These are two completely different territories with completely different mindsets and viewpoints of their populations. West Bengal is far more than just Bengal.
West Bengal even though a much smaller territory than say neighboring Bihar has a huge impact on the rest of India . There is a reason why the Indian National Anthem is in Bengali.
West Bengal is economically strategic to India with Calcutta alone having an economy of $260 billion. West Bengal's strategic economic assets for India is huge, with coal, steel, heavy engineering, ship building automobile and industrial goods. Agricultural produce such as tea are huge exports and foreign exchange earners. There are several near world class centers of academic excellence such as the engineering institutes. West Bengal is much more than just another Indian province. It is a nerve center of secular Indian nationalism, and progressive Indian thought. If West Bengal goes than it is one more shredding of India's secular fabric and India's descent into madness.

Watching from Pakistan, even I hate to see a culturally vibrant and secular people being manipulated into abandoning their heritage and being converted into a rabid fascist mob.
