Maldives suspects 'in Pakistan'

.

Neo between you and me I went there for a vacation this year and the only Chinese presence I saw was a workshop of Chinese repairing Chinese fishing trawlers. There was no security or nothing interesting there so I doubt a base has been set up or will be set up there. Atleast not Chinese. I did however see a lot of US Naval personnel there. I was told there were visiting from a ship which was anchored in the bay. A tourism official told me that they had no intentions of getting involved in any politics concerning China or India. Their main livelihood is tourism and they are happy with that. I also met a very goodlooking couple who were working for Forbes (sponsored by the Govt) to do a report on Maldives and they emailed me the reports two months ago. I did ask one of them about this india / China game and they told me that they visited all islands and felt its all conjecture till date with no ground reality. They however mentioned that they (Malidives) have two defence agreements one with India and one with USA to allow them to land troops in the event of a coup. It was signed after the last coup in the 1996.

Regards

Sorry Neo...
for how long does not matter.
At this moment India has perhaps the BIGGEST influence in Maldives with US probably being the only contendor.

There is no Pakistan here. Pakistan is a non actor in Maldives. Please dont expect that Pakistan's support means anything there.

AN,

I too have visited Maldives couple of times, the archipello counts for over 300 islands. I don't expect Chinese to flood Male with military hardware or personnel. China will be more interested in establishing a listening post rather than an armed naval base.

Malay,

Maldives is your backyard and it will remain so for a long time to come but we have our own way of dealing with smaller countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Our influence will only be visible when you make a mistake.
You can count on it! ;)

Everybody is got a problem...with pakistan.

Really? That is news to me...although I hear it often from the Indians. Lets not overly simplify the situation to suit your own liking please.

Cummon Neo, dont post dramatic statements like 'when you make a mistake'. Maldives has a sizeable Indian population. India gives military equipment, prefential trade treatment, etc etc continuously to Maldives. When the tsunami hit there, we were the first Navy to reach and assist them. India was the largest contributor in the aid efforts there and the first to reach them. Try all you might, but Pakistan is a nonentity in many nations. You have to accept that.
