Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had already abolished the khilafat over a decade ago in 1924.

Your idea of history is skewed. Modern Turkey is the successor state of Ottomans.

Atatürk himself was a hero of Gallipoli, where many of Pakistani ancestors mutinied against the British and switched sides to Turkey. The British were so alarmed, they started murdering and mutilating bodies of Muslim soldiers in advance, assuming all were guilty.

Neither British nor anyone else was able to understand why Muslim soldiers had loyalty to Turks, but there is only one reason, which La ilaha ila Allah.

But do you know what was Gandhi's ulterior motive to support this movement?

Gandhi backed out (Tui dikha dee) when the movement was at its peak leaving Muslims in a lurch.

His motive was not to support the Turks, why would he? It was a temporary convergence of interests.

Nevertheless, it were Muslims of the Sub Continent who donated large sums of money to be used in Turkish war of independence; not the Hindus or Sikhs.

As a matter of fact, Gandhi did support Khilafat movement. Not the other two names.

But that doesn't mean anything: the Turkish politician's arguments are valid. Only Muslims of the Subcontinent were behind it.

It was championed by Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Shaukat Ali Jauhar and Hakim Ajmal Khan. All later became Muslim League members. Same Muslim League that championed Pakistan.
