Maratha is a Hindu cast. Marathi means marathis. I think

BTW non-marathi speaking Muslims are more than Marathi speaking Muslims in Maharashtra. From what I have heard rural Marathi Muslims are well-off. It's the non-marathi speaking Muslims who are found in Thane-Mumba-NaviMumbai-Pune are the discriminated ones and poor. No wonder why Shiv Sena is opposing reservations. This might be the regional angle besides the religious one.

But weren't Muslims the rulers of India for 800 years, why should rulers need reservations. Meanwhile SCs,STs and OBCs have historically been a persecuted lot hence the need for reservations. Only low caste Muslim converts deserve reservations.

For those talking about religion based reservations not being allowed, one must understand that caste based reservation has now become a joke with all the forward castes now claiming backward status. Look I am not in the favour of religious/Caste based reservation, but when you can give reservation to Hindus based on their caste, why should certain section of Backward muslims be left out.

Absolutely correct except that OBC's now have begun to include forward & dominant castes.

For reservation system to be successful in emancipation of backward sections it should solely be based on economic status of an individual irrespective of his caste or religion. But that is not happening anytime soon, so the Muslim backward castes should be given reservations which they are being given under OBC quota. Whether or not they should be given reservations under SC or ST quota is a matter debatable. But to say all Muslims must get reservations because they are Muslims as suggested by our resident jihadi here is ludicrous.
