Bajaj close to acquiring performance bike brand Ducati?

One of India's major two-wheeler manufacturers, Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL), is likely to announce acquisition of the European performance motorcycle brand - Ducati.

At the company's annual general meeting on Thursday, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of BAL, told shareholders that the company is close to settle a new alliance.

"We are very close to finalising a very promising alliance. It's not certain that it will happen, but if it happens, it will open up enormous possibilities for the company," Rajiv said.

He also told that if things go in the ballpark, an official announcement will be made within the next two weeks. However, any Bajaj official declined to name the brand
that the company is in talks with.

Around a month back, Harley-Davidson and Bajaj were reportedly in talks with Volkswagen group to take possession+ of its Audi-controlled Ducati motorbike brand. The reports also suggested that there are numerous other groups bidding for its acquisition, including the Indian manufacturers - Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield.

A recent update on Reuters news agency suggests that Italy's Benetton family seeks to make Ducati motorbikes Italian again. "Ducati has received several tentative bids with the Benetton family's investment vehicle Edizione Holding valuing the Monster motorbike maker at $1.2 billion," one of the sources told Reuters.

At the same time, an Italian news website reported that KTM AG, 48 per cent of whose equity stakes are owned by Bajaj Auto, is closing in on the Ducati brand

So, the possibility of Bajaj closing the deal to acquire Ducati and announce another iconic international brand under its umbrella is rather high.

The Pune-based auto major is already making good use of the technology provided by its Austrian partner in making advanced motorcycles at an economical cost. Now, it will be interesting to see how the performance brand Ducati gels with the Indian automaker, if the acquisition is concluded successfully.

That's old news mate. Apparently Ducati isn't for sale anymore as the Porsche and Piech families who own the controlling stake in VW aren't interested in selling the brand. Moreover, Bajaj isn't in the 5 companies who have been shortlisted. Benetton family’s investment vehicle, Edizione Holding, U.S. automotive firm Polaris Industries and private equity funds such as Ducati’s previous owner Investindustrial, France’s PAI and Bain Capital are the ones shortlisted before the sale has been called off.

Indian auto and auto components are clocking:
  • $ Billion 10+10= 20 Billion in exports
But Belgium, France, Spain, UK, Turkey,, Thailand, Mexico, S. Korea and Canada are far ahead, never mind Germany, US and Japan - toppers all.

Surprising India is not growing faster in this play with all the labour, steel and local demand to ... the sky is the limit!

Re. vast improvement seen in this thread since pictures speak a 1000 words; even casual followers of the thread may consider buying Indian auto stock without analysis.

The DTC (Delhi Transport Corp.) has a fleet of 3,944 buses while the DIMTS (Delhi Integrated Multimodal Transit System) runs 1,634 buses under the cluster scheme, as per the transport department statistics.

The combined strength of around 5,600 buses covers nearly 75 per cent of the identified routes in the city. A total of 799 mini buses also ply on 124 routes, according to the statistics.

Pssst ... word is, India is looking to clean up in the small and hatch size electric vehicle market, feedback welcome. Idea being to leverage small vehicles industrial manufacturing base to amp and blow away the above mentioned play.

Technically speaking, I see opportunity in Indian OEM contract manufacturing for Global players while retaining local branding rather then Indian OEM punting Globally under their own steam. Tatas failed deals on same with Fiat and VW never mind.

Mahindra's Robot Tractor

I just realised that India is probably among Global leaders in electric vehicles.
Hehe, you are thinking - Tesla, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius. India's reality - electric 3 wheelers !

Small, stop-&-go, 3-wheel auto rickshaw transport is where India's built up HR and supplier eco-system. Mahindra, TVS, Vikram Auto and some others have built up the mojo. Chk:
