Ceat India expects Rs 400-500 crore turnover from Bangladesh market (JV with AK Khan Group)

Aug 26, 2014, 04.44 PM IST

Ceat is looking at expansion in the two-wheeler market. It plans to expand the capacity in Bangladesh plant to 65 tonnes per day and the Halol (India) plant capacity to 100 tonnes per day.

......................................................................................................................
Nigel: You were very successful in Sri Lanka so are you looking to replicate that in Bangladesh? Give us an outlook with regard to your Bangladesh joint venture, when exactly will it reach those higher capacity utilization levels and when are we looking at commissioning?

A: We are still at quite an early stage in the Bangladesh plant setup; we are still undergoing the civil work at this point of time. It will take a little bit over 14-16 months for the plant to be ready and then perhaps another 10-12 months for capacity utilization to go up to 75-80 percent. So we are still over two years away from high capacity utilization in Bangladesh.

Secondly, Bangladesh itself is not a very large market so the kind of benefit or turnover increase will not be substantial. At peak perhaps our turnover would be around Rs 400-500 crore but margin should be attractive and long-term profitability is expected to be good because competition there is very limited, and like in Sri Lanka there is place for only one player in Bangladesh and we hope to occupy that very quickly from a manufacturing perspective. Therefore we will be able to provide a lot of benefit with respect to after sales service to the Bangladesh consumer as well as lower costs because of having a manufacturing base out there.

“I am delighted to have the Nitol Niloy Group come on board as our partner in this market. I am sure with their rich experience in this market we will be able to provide convenient, fuel-efficient mobility to every customer.”

Mr. Pawan Munjal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Hero MotoCorp Ltd.

Mr. Abdul Matlub Ahmad, Chairman, Nitol Niloy Group of Companies said “The scope of this agreement is quite significant for our Group as our partner in this JV is the world’s largest manufacturer of two-wheelers. The aim is to join hands with Hero MotoCorp in order to provide technologically-advanced, innovative and fuel-efficient two-wheelers for customers in Bangladesh. With this JV, our business and enterprise now enters a new era of innovation and excellence. I agree with Mr. Munjal that through this JV, we will be playing a catalyst role in the development of ancillary industry in Bangladesh and beyond.

In keeping with its vision of expanding its global footprint to as many as 50 countries by 2020, Hero MotoCorp Ltd (HMCL) – the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer – today launched its operations in Bangladesh through a Joint Venture (JV) with the reputed Nitol Niloy Group.

The historic Joint Venture was announced here today by Mr. Pawan Munjal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Hero MotoCorp Ltd, and Mr. Abdul Matlub Ahmad, Chairman, Nitol Niloy Group of Companies, in the presence of the Industry Minister of Bangladesh H.E. Mr. Amir Hossain Amu and the Acting High Commissioner of India in Dhaka, Mr. Sandeep Chakravorty, and Group Managing Director of Nitol Niloy Group, Mr. Abdul Musabbir Ahmad.

While Hero MotoCorp has rapidly expanded its global footprint, this is the company’s first overseas joint venture to set up a two-wheeler manufacturing plant outside of India, since it commenced its solo journey almost three years ago. Hero will hold majority stake of 55 per cent in the new JV while the Nitol Niloy Group will hold the rest 45 per cent stake. There will be a total equity injection of US$ 12.6 million in a ratio of 55:45 over a period of two years. The new venture will have a CAPEX of US$ 23.2 million in the first year of its operation (Financial Year 2014-15) and a total investment of US$40 million over the next five years.

While the manufacturing plant will be operational by the second quarter of FY 2015-16, the Hero range of two-wheelers are already being made available in Bangladesh through the initial 50 retail outlets. Mr. Munjal today inaugurated the first of the flagship Hero showrooms in Dhaka. More outlets are also being rapidly added in markets across the country.

The range of Hero two-wheelers being made available in the country include successful models like the entry-level segment 100cc bikes- HF Dawn & HF Deluxe, Splendor+, Splendor Pro, Splendor iSmart, Passion Pro, the deluxe segment125cc Super Splendor and Glamour and the premium segment 150cc Xtreme and Hunk, and the 100-cc scooter Pleasure.

Hero has launched an unprecedented 5-year warranty on all these models in Bangladesh – a statement of confidence in the technological superiority of its products.

The Splendor iSmart is the most recently launched offering of Hero MotoCorp that comes with the revolutionary i3S (Idle Stop and Start System) technology. i3S technology automatically shuts the engine when idling, and turns it on when needed, with a simple press of the clutch, giving more mileage in congested cities.

Hero MotoCorp (formerly Hero Honda Motors Ltd) will soon launch brand-building initiatives in this market with the Bengali version of the iconic Hero anthem “Hum Main Hai Hero” (There’s a Hero in Each of Us) which will be aired across television platforms in Bangladesh. There will also be brand-specific communications to establish Hero products in the country.

Hero MotoCorp – since charting its solo journey after separating from erstwhile partner Honda in 2011 – has fast augmented its global presence. As of today, Hero two-wheelers already sell in as many as 18 countries including Peru and Ecuador in South America; Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador in Central America; Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda in East Africa; Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Congo and Angola in West Africa and most recently Turkey and Egypt.

Rancon Motor Bikes Ltd. (RMBL) has signed an agreement with Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan, to manufacture and distribute its two wheelers products throughout Bangladesh.

Rangs Group is one of the larger conglomerates in Bangladesh with headquarters in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

They have been assemblers and local distributors for SONY brand large scale electronics products like LED TV's, Fridge, Aircon, appliances etc. including Canon consumer goods and copier/printer products.

RMBL's state of the art factory is planned to be the largest assembly factory for motorbikes in Bangladesh.

The company initially plans to produce (with at least 30% value addition) basic bikes such as HAYATE and SLINGSHOT PLUS SEU and assemble upmarket popular models such as GIXXER (GSX-R) 155 cc as well as GS-150-R. However eventually it will also start to indigenize production of parts locally for upmarket bikes as well if local market volume and exports warrant as such.

In addition to bikes - there will be a small selection of scooters produced and offered locally as well (images below).

PHP to Set Up Automobile Plant in JV with Proton SDN BERHAD (Malaysia)

Published: March 21, 2015

PHP, a business conglomerate based in Chittagong, is going to manufacture sedan cars in a JV with Proton SDN BERHAD, an automobile manufacturer from Malaysia, aiming to release them in the market by the beginning of next year.

The company signed a deal with Proton in this regard on Thursday, at Proton's 'Centre for Excellence' Complex in Selangor, Malaysia.

PHP is going to set up the industry on 30 acres of land in Anwara Upazilla, with a capacity of manufacturing 1,200 cars per year. The company is investing around Tk. 400 crore in the project, which will employ several hundreds of workers, including 50 engineers.

The sedan - to be named 'Proton PHP', will be more economical to purchase than Toyota reconditioned cars available in Bangladesh, said Proton CEO Dato Abdul Harith Abdullah.

However, he said Proton assembles all its vehicles following strict international standards and it would help PHP maintain these high motor manufacturing standards.

PHP Vice-Chairman Mohammad Mohsin Chowdhury said the company would bear all repair expenses if the vehicle faced any technical problem within 25,000km of Proton PHP run.

“The company will assure all repair services within 24 hours of problems being reported,” he said.

Proton began its journey in Malaysia in 1985. The company sold 13,000 cars of this brand in that year locally, and 83,000 the following year. Proton is now manufacturing cars for different countries in the Middle East and Australia.

Proton doesn't have a very good reputation when it comes to their cars.

I'd rather buy an Allion over one of those any day.

I hear you. But I think we should encourage auto manufacturing to advance local manufacturing expertise. As a country we've been waiting a while to get and maintain our own brand.

And being low cost - should appeal to a certain class of people (maybe not you or me). Plus parts and warranty support would be better.

Bangladesh has a whole subclass of people waiting to buy these types of cars. I'd rather have them buy these rather than sub-subcompact death traps in the Maruti 800 or (Allah forbid) the Tata Nano class. Those cars are made so cheap and flimsy they do not even pass Euro crash standards.

Toyota Allion (and its JDM luxurious cousin 'Premio') are descendants of the older model Toyota Carina, which was placed in between the Corolla and Camry in size. Those Protons shown above are mostly Corolla size or smaller except the 'Inspira' - which is based on the Mitsubishi Gallant (Camry fighter).
