Lucky escape for 180 after Karachi ATC misleads city-bound Air India flight

In what could spark off yet another India-Pakistan row, the air traffic control (ATC) officials at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport set a Mumbai-bound Air India Dreamliner plane from London on a wrong frequency, nearly causing a mid-air collision.

Shockingly, the Karachi ATC was responding to an SoS from its Mumbai counterparts as well as the Air India flight commander after the aircraft lost contact with the Mumbai ATC.

The 15-minute chaos, during which the plane came in the direct path of a Cebu Airline flight that took off from Dubai, ended only after the Air India pilot managed to contact the Ahmedabad ATC, which guided it to safety.

Top Air India sources, who have been debriefed about the incident, said that the Mumbai ATC officials called up the Karachi airport officials around 1.30 am Tuesday and provided details of the Air India flight AI 130, which had around 180 passengers on board with a crew of 11.

"The flight had taken off from London's Heathrow Airport and its final destination was Ahmedabad. It was already in the Mumbai airspace when we lost contact. As Karachi is a nearby location, we sent an SoS to the Jinnah Airport ATC saying a few basic requirements needed to be conveyed to the pilots urgently," a Mumbai ATC official said.

In the meantime, the flight commander, who was unable to contact the Mumbai ATC even after trying various frequencies, also contacted the Karachi ATC, which put the flight on a different frequency.

"The Karachi ATC did not convey our message to the pilots. It directed the plane to a wrong frequency and gave us incorrect information that the commander will contact Mumbai soon," an aviation source said, adding that the pilot realised something was seriously wrong when he noticed heavy air traffic.

The aviation sources said that while the Mumbai ATC officials were briefing their Pakistani counterparts regarding the problem, they could hear laughter in the background. "This is a very serious incident and the Mumbai ATC has taken up the matter with Karachi officially," the Airports Authority of India chairman, Alok Sinha, said.

The Indian pilots who have had to deal with the Pakistan airport ATCs were not surprised. One of them said that the Karachi airport officials not cooperating with the Indian pilots was "nothing new", even as aviation expert Vipul Saxena said such "irresponsible behaviour was unheard of". He said, "This mischief could have led to one of the biggest disasters of our times. I hope the government will take up this issue with Islamabad."
 
Beats me?? It baffles me that they would intentionally mislead and cause confusion.

I always wonder what is in their genes that causes this heartburn. They can shove their MFN up their ... for all I care.
 
WTF this is a pretty serious case. GoI should really take it up to Global Aviation body to avoid such kind of incidents in future.
 
Give them benefit of the doubt guys, it is already a pain to tackle all the flights that are flying in the area.
 
Really unfortunate that we can't count on our neighbours even during distress.
Its not about reliability, mistakes happen, happens to Pakistani airlines too. P.s most deadliest mid-air collision occurred in India but does that mean that Indians are unreliable? And a 787 flight with only 191 people on-board sounds rough
 
Obviously, you guys are absolute novices when it comes to Aviation Business.

The Flight going to India is the responsibility of Indian Controllers.

Karachi ATC only controls Air Traffic within a 25 mile radius of Karachi Airport.

The Indian Aircraft was probably hundreds off miles from Pakistan airspace.

Besides that, not being able to talk to an en route ARTCC does not put the Aircraft in any jeopardy. The aircrafts are already spaced out and assigned different Flight altitudes.

Modern Jetliners have GPS Navigation aids on board and they do not need to absolutely have to be in contact with an ARTCC all the time. This is not even an emergency situation, just a minor inconvenience.

Only a Drama Queen with no knowledge of Aviation business would put out this headline:

Your reporters should do some research and learn something about Aviation business before making fools of themselves with such headlines.

Indians in the comment section are claiming that Pakistan did it on purpose :lol: 787 is a modern jet liner with advanced tcas warning system which would have warned the pilot if the plane came too close to another. The shocking news should be that a 787 flight from london was only carrying 180 paying passengers, poor business
 
Coming from air india, the same airline and same ground control that created a global drama of an indian airliner hijacking that abruptly came to an end when Pakistan announced to shoot down the airliner if it entered Pakistan airspace, and the fuuny reason given by inda, "some one called indian aviation authority (or whatever) and informed that an air indai plane is hijacked, they (IA) called the pilot and told that his plane is hijacked, and he (pilot) called Pakistan ATC to inform that his plane is hijacked and he needs permission to land in Pakistan. LOL LOL, when Pakistan announced that Pakistan will shoot down the plane if entered its air space, the same indian authorities told the plane that his plane is not hijacked, an dpilot informs Pakistani authorities that his aviation authority just told him that his plane is not hijacked...LOL fucking idiots

Same thing again here, the plane is in indian airspace and they phone Pakistan ATC to convey their message to their plane in their airspace, what? really? Isn't this the same country which boasts their radars can track all birds flying within Pakistan air space?
