'Londependence' petition calls for London to join the EU on its own

In the EU referendum, London was overwhelmingly in favour of the UK staying with its union-mates, the Remain vote in some parts reaching over 70 per cent.

This split between capital and country has led some to suggest London go it alone and be made eligible to apply for EU membership as a city.

“London is an international city, and we want to remain at the heart of Europe,” a change.org petition states.

“Let's face it - the rest of the country disagrees… so let's make the divorce official and move in with our friends on the continent.

“This petition is calling on Mayor Sadiq Khan to declare London independent, and apply to join the EU - including membership of the Schengen Zone (Umm, we'll talk about the Euro…).”

The petition has already attracted 28,000 signatures at the time of writing.

It’s not the only one trying to attract support in the wake of the vote for Brexit, with another calling for a second referendum due to the narrow margin of the vote in relation to the turnout.

It has already drawn over 100,000 signees on parliament.uk, which means it will be considered for debate in parliament.

Sadie Khan insisted “there is no need to panic,” this morning, reassuring Europeans living in London “You are welcome here. We value the enormous contribution you make to our city and that will not change as a result of this referendum."

Petition for London to leave Britain and stay in European Union

It's not just Scottish seccession that Britain needs to worry about.

A petition for London to leave Britain and join the European Union has picked up more than 95,000 signatures.

Petition organiser James O'Malley says in his entreaty to Londoners on Change.org: "London is an international city, and we want to remain at the heart of Europe."

He hashtagged his petition #londependence, and appealed to London mayor Sadiq Khan: "Wouldn't you prefer to be President Sadiq?".

Nearly 60 per cent of people in the capital backed the Remain campaign, said the BBC.


Mr O'Malley told the BBC he was "astonished" the petition had taken off but suggested it showed he had "clearly touched a nerve" with others who "like me want to live in an international city".

One supporter of the petition posted arguments for London's independence that parody those voiced by the leave camp.

"London has *no control* over its borders while it remains a member of the UK. Since 2007, there have been more people coming into London from the UK than there have from the rest of the world combined," the supporter John Gowers said.

Mr Sadiq asked for calm in response to the referendum result, and said that he will push for Britain to remain within the single market.

"I still believe that our country is better off within the European Union, but there is no doubt that London will continue to be the successful city it is today," he said.

He also addressed Europeans living in London, who he said "make a huge contribution to our city".

"You are welcome here. We value the enormous contribution you make to our city and that will not change as a result of this referendum," he said.
