Lockheed Martin will be awarded a contract to help the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces (RSADF) develop their Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) requirement, it was announced on 5 September.

The announcement was made via the US Federal Business Opportunities website, which said the US Missile Defense Agency would award a non-competitive contract to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control to provide “technical assistance to support requirement definition pertaining to the facilities design, system test, material fielding, training, system operations, maintenance, and sustainment concepts for RSADF THAAD".

No further details of the contract were revealed.

The THAAD system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the earth’s atmosphere and has already been ordered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and requested by Qatar.

When has Israel violated KSA's territory and do you have any information that shows them planning to do so? I hope that you realize (with all due respect to Israel) that Israel is no military threat for KSA or any other major Arab power/regional power in the region such as neighboring Egypt?

Just to be sure, do you really believe that tiny Israel is able to invade KSA (12 largest country in the world with one of the toughest and most challenging geographies (mostly mountainous, deserts, 1000's upon 1000's of valleys, steppes etc.) in the world)?

I am only asking because I have seen you posting that ridiculous "Greater Israel" map which is as likely as India solving its poverty problem tomorrow morning. No disrespect to that country or people. In other words impossible.

THAAD is crap? Interesting theory.

Great news.

Once (in the late 80') Usraeli F-16s tried to violate KSA airspace..they were forced to land in KSA and it was kept a secret and led to KSA getting much more weapons that were forbidden to it before this event.. and once Natanyahu own presidential plane was tryng to get through KSA's airspae and was forced to deviate its course.. this is just to tell some not very informed people about the level of readiness of the Saudi air-force..

Great news indeed.. more so if we think that KSA wll get the most advanced version of THAAD.. the "ER" (Extended Range) version..which explains the delivery date by 2022.. hope KSA will start with the actual THAAD system by 2019 and then get the "ER" version afterwards..

Dear

You do realize one day ( not too far ) it has to happen.
Neither you nor anyone else can change that.

Indeed. However I was thinking about the current era. Our Pakistani friend was making it sound like USrael was violating KSA's territory on a weekly basis which is obviously absurd.

Exactly. In any case the THAAD is a formidable anti-ballistic missile defense system by all accounts. Maybe, just maybe, we will see it in action in South Korea soon although I consider such a scenario doubtful for now.

Dear, hopefully you are not one of those that honestly believe that Usrael is capable of establishing their imaginary "Greater Usrael". I did not expect that. The same Usrael that with all odds in her favor has failed to subdue the Palestinians and ultimately will fail in her quest for a one-state solution. As for tiny Golan, we all have to thank Al-Assad Sr. for that misery.

BTW Usrael is being routinely overrated time and time again. I am not sure how they would even be able to invade let alone take control of a good chunk of Northern KSA as per their imaginary maps.

That is not what I was hinting at.

The big contract will pay off in many ways, this being one of the biggest and best items of a superb list of weaponry. The naval ships are right up there as well. The entire list that we know of so far includes the most sophisticated weapons systems available to date, and the fact that the development of the Saudi THAAD will be local is the frosting on the cake. Very nice. Now they just need to speed up the work and get things going. There should be a top priority on this particular system out of the entire package.

It is operational in SK now and they are getting another 3 batteries for a total of 4..
