Bangladesh faces one of the worst power crises of the world. The total demand for electricity in the country is in fact less than the demand of a medium sized city in Europe. Still, due to lack of planned investment in the power sector, load shedding has become the flagship phenomenon of the country's electricity system. Unplanned urbanization and excessive system loss has compounded the problems. Some parts of the capital city of Dhaka may face black outs for more than 10 hours a day during the very hot summer. The power shortage eventually leads to the failure of water supply. Most citizens have to face a miserable life with little water and no electricity under the scorching tropical heat. Smaller cities and the countrysides of Bangladesh face a worse situation. Many villages of this low lying country are not yet electrified. However, the electrified villages get the real supply of electricity seldom more than 6 hours in each 24 hour span. There are no significant power station projects in the pipeline and the situation is going to get worse in the coming years.

What is the ground situation right now?
The question which arise in my mind after reading this is that why Govt. of Bangladesh is not investing in new projects for meeting supply shortage?? is the situation really so severe about electricity shortages in Bangladesh or is the wikipedia exaggerating?

Thanks to BNP - Jamaat govt for this.
Things are getting better now. One good thing bout BD as most of the big industry do have their own power, so we are still surviving in industrial output even though they are suffering.

In BNP-Jammat govt electricity shortage but far less than what it is today.
Toady electricity goes off almost every other hour. Sensing unrest Awami govt has diverted electricity from villages to Dhaka and main cities. But villages are severely suffering as a result of this diversion.

At Fag end of BNP rule 1 garments/knitwear was built every 2-3 weeks. FDI reached all time high to close to $1 billion, domestic investment was twice as much and economy was growing at the rate of 7%. Export earning from garments/knitwear testify to these facts. All these industrial activities increased the demand significantly. All the new power generation project BNP left in the pipeline were cancelled by Awami League sponsored (by Hasina and Awami leadership admission) interim govt in last two years. There was virtually no new generation capacity added.

As usual you only have Awami branded propaganda and misinformation to feed. Please provide list of measures Awami govt taken to address the power crisis? Don’t mention MOU signed for nuclear power, couple of those already been signed and would not be materialized in even in next 10 years.

BNP obviously have a hand for this.New power plants can not be built within 5 or 6 months after coming to power. Our demand for electricity increased and so the situation is worse now.BNP when they were in power should have taken decisions to build new units, instead they gobbled up all the money. They did not build a single unit in five years, instead the caretaker Govt. built an unit within two years.Don't give misinformation and don't use diverting tactics to defend BNP.This electricity was one of the main reason of their downfall and it does not matter whether you admit it or not.

The condition in the middle improved a lot,so don't give misinformation sitting in US.But for last two days the condition deteriorated again.Excess heat is the reason.

Having said all that,AL is no different from BNP.So we,the people will always be the sufferer.

Villages never had electricity properly no matter which govt. in power.I know this because my Father worked at Rural electrification Board. There are connections but no supply. It all comes down to power stations.

I have a question to iajdani, how much electricity does coal based power plants produce?I am guessing its low,but we should use it as we have large reserves of coal. What's your say?

Coal fired plant could be 10 MW to 1000 MW or whatever. But the common practice is if you want a 1000 MW plant then, you probably want to install four 250 MW units in the same plant. Again every vendor have their own preferences of capacity in building the units.

If your quesion is regarding heating value of coal that means how much Electricity you get from certain amount of coal then I dont have the exact figure. Also different category of coal has their own heating value. But to give you a idea, you will need 30 wagon full of coal to feed a 250 MW plant per day. Its huge... :enjoy:

Aha, Leon has come back with nothing but another sack of lies. Here is how your red hot lie "they (BNP) did not build a single unit in five years" exposed.

From top of my memory here are some of the power projects BNP govt worked on. With over 600 MW additional capacity including first coal fired power plant. And all other power projects BNP govt had undertaken and were in different stages of implementation would have added over 1500MW capacity. But Awami League sponsored interim govt who ruled the country for two years canceled most of these big projects. So we are now in acute power crisis because of actions by Awami sponsored interim govt.

Tongi power plant 80 MW (completed)
Boropukuria coal plant 250 MW (completed)
Shiddhirganj plant 210 MW (completd)
Megnaghat 2nd phase 450 MW (on implementation phase when canceled)
Chandpur power plant 150 MW (on implementation phase when canceled)
Sirajganj power-plant 450 MW (on bidding process, AL sponsored interim govt did not followed through)
Bibiyana power project 450 MW (on bidding process, AL sponsored interim govt did not followed through)

Power crisis must be resolved now
PM directs ministry officials to tap surplus electricity in neighbouring nations
Unb, Dhaka

The prime minister went on saying: "But, unfortunately, the BNP-led four-party alliance did not follow our power policy. The alliance government did not install a single power plant in its tenure."

The premier deplored that hundreds of crores of taka had been allocated for the power sector during the BNP-Jamaat regime, but the nation got nothing out of the public money.

Around 1,250MW of power has been added to the national grid since the alliance led by the BNP took office in October, 2001, but apart from one power project with a capacity of 80MW, all other projects were undertaken either by the previous Awami League government or by the BNP government preceding them.

Just 80 MW was their contribution in 5 years, when you are the one who said BD was flourishing that time.Didn't we need more?

Per year we are adding 1000 MW of extra demand. For the last five years we needed another extra 5000 MW powers. And you came up with 500 MW and you are praising that govt.
To give you more realistic figure, there were huge misappropriation of money on Tongi and Boropukuria. Tongi could hardly produce any electricity and Boropukuria broke down every other day and could produce 30% of its capacity.
The rest of them you mentioned are self explanatory. The donors were unwilling to pay any more money to BNP govt due to huge corruption and they were unable to come up with alternative source of money. Just read the comment of Tuku then power minister.

7% growth rate came from private investment. Investment/GDP is 19% from private sector and around average 5% in public sector and in BNP's term it was going down every year. There were not a single project which I could come up with in BNP tenure except funny Mohakhali fly over. In the last moment Haris and Hawa bhaban awarded Jatrabari fly over to Hosaf group which is now bankrupt and the owner is in jail for corruption. Saifur Rahman, cut down Dhaka-Sylhet highway from 4 lane to 2 lane (ALs land mark achievement). BNP govt could not even award the Dhaka-Chittagong highway tender only because, dispute in sharing the bribes. These are just few examples.

Except for few souls high on indo-Awami propaganda energy no government could produce 1000 MW additional unit per year. There isn't enough money to do that period. So before jumping on your chronic bs lets show if Awami can deliver that much.

As for statement that donors did not provide money for plant because of corruption is just pure ignorance to its core. Only people who takes PA and DS as absolute truth are fit for that kind of babbling.

Each donor has their own agenda about company from which country should get these contracts; that includes Chinese as well. These contracts were over fattened to benefit foreign companies at the expanse of Bangladeshi taxpayers. When BNP took action and cutting excess donors raised corruption hue and cry and withheld money from projects. That’s not to say there was not corruption but no where near you love to propagate here.

As goes with indo-Awami tradition - more lie and spin to cover previous lie.

In present day, govt role is to facilitate and create environment for business to florish. That is exactly BNP did by taking prudent fiscal economic and business policy to get to 7% GDP growth. That is even with all of your indo-Awami cooked up stories.

BNP govt awarded the 6 lane dhaka-ctg highway contract to a Mylaysian company, so did Jatrabari flyover to Orin-Belhasa group. While Jatrabari flyover work progressed quite a bit both projects were cancelled by Awami league sponsored interim govt. So you can tell all the lie but truth is out there and most people knows it.

Only Tongi with 80 MW plant is from BNP tenure.Others were planned before.Read the link I posted.

I don't need to be spoon fed by a person who can't eat properly himself.

One advice to you,you might be some BNP leader or whatever, but criticising BNP does not mean he or she is an AL worshipper.Your words really makes me laugh, where do you get all these words from?
One obedient chamcha of Khaleda Zia I guess.

Mr.Idune keeps talking about 7% economic growth....excuse me are you still in 2005?
Don't you see it 2009,and its time of great Depression? You have to take these factors into consideration don't you?You should be knowing this as you are a "Businessman".
