Lithuania cancels decision to donate Covid-19 vaccines to Bangladesh after UN vote on Russia

Lithuania has cancelled its decision to donate Covid-19 vaccines to Bangladesh after the country abstained during the United Nations General Assembly vote on condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Rasa Jakilaitienė, a spokeswoman for the prime minister, has said.

Earlier this week, the government decided to send 444,600 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to Bangladesh.

The UN General Assembly on Wednesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution that demands Russia to “immediately” withdraw from Ukraine.

After more than two days of debate, which saw the Ukrainian ambassador accuse Russia of genocide, 141 out of 193 UN member states voted in favour of the non-binding resolution.

Bangladesh was among the 35 countries that abstained, while just five – Eritrea, North Korea, Syria, Belarus, and, of course, Russia – voted against it.

The resolution “deplores” the invasion of Ukraine “in the strongest terms” and condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s decision to put his nuclear forces on alert.

At the same time, the General Assembly expressed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.

Who cares.

All of BD “vulnerable” are now jabbed and BD is at “herd immunity” from omicron variant.

BD has plenty of vaccines to give timely vaccines to its “vulnerable” going forward.
What herd immunity you always talk? Already more than 28,000 people have died of Corona disease.

All lives are precious. Being a poor and disorganized country, BD failed to organize treatment that other countries can do.

I wonder, if you will be named the next health minister of the country. You will not be any different from the present one without the capability to organizing a thing.

.
Is BD producing medicines? I read news that America is sending millions of doses to BD every month.

No news about Beximco field trials yet. I thought our Darvesh company would really do something.

There are at least four companies that completed representative testing of mRNA covid vaccines they developed themselves. More than a dozen pharma outfits can produce injectable US vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) using foreign raw materials. Ditto with co-production of Chinese injectable vaccines locally.

Bangladesh has received enough vaccine under COVAX program from various countries so did not go ahead with testing and approval of local vaccines. Globe Biotech's Bangavax was almost ready for commercial production but then the infection rate went down rapidly.

Beximco and Squire have also come out with oral medications for Covid, which is under license I think.

As an independent nation, Lithuania reserves every right to go fcuk themselves.

I don't know if the local licensed production of Sputnik V will still go ahead - if it does, we should donate some to Lithiumionia.

Lithuania may be overreacting. But personally I think, Bangladesh should have condemned Russian military aggression over Ukraine. Failing to condemn clear violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of smaller, weaker neighbor by a powerful aggressor give rise a dangerous precedence. Should we normalize this things in 21st century? After ww2, we accepted that, no matter what, forceful redrawing of boundary is never allowed, one sovereign country can not wage war of conquest against another. But this consensus seems to be falling apart with the rise of powerful dictatorial regime in Russia and China. What will happen if China start war of conquest against Taiwan by taking inspiration from Putin? If we do not stand on to protect this universal values than do we really can cry if we find ourselves on a same conundrum as Ukraine? Can we expect Western countries to condemn if we face similar aggression in future? suppose if India gobble up Chittagong division giving some lame excuse? Would not expecting Western countries to stand by us a little hypocritical?

141 out of 191 UN members condemned Russian aggression in UN votting. Why Bangladesh could not be one of those? Sure, this UN condemnation will do little harm against Russia. But these UN voting are mainly about who stand with whom. If Bangladesh was one of those 141 countries, it would have given a positive signals to the Western capitals about Bangladesh whose benefits we could have gained in many ways. Lithuania may not seems significant for us, but we need to understand, Lithuania is a part of the collective West. Just because, USA, UK, Germany are not showing displeasure to us, does not mean they did not notice.

You can never appease the West enough - ask Pakistan, still carrying scars from arming the Mujahideen. Best to remain neutral.

Pakistan is a bad example with the engagement with West. We should look at Japan, South Korea, Taiwan etc. Much of the Pakistan's suffering is self inflicted. Pakistan tried to double game with the West, hence got terrorism and sluggish economy. I think, West handled Pakistan with kids gloves, they do not want a failed Muslim country of 220 million with nuclear weapons. They could have easily ruined Pakistan's remaining economy, but choose not to do so.

There is no such thing as universal laws. BD stands alone as it always. We must pursue our national interest and do whatever it takes dispassionately.

In this instance neutrality was the best action.... that is not to say it was without repercussion.... it was simply the least worst option for us. We can not risk roupour Nuclear power plant for Ukraine.... i would not personally value the lives of entire population of Ukraine even at 1 cent. I dont care how many of them dies or whatever. It is simply not an issue for me.... i get others will see this as a humanitarian catastrophe that requires a collective action. I understand the view, it is as valid as any other view, i simply do not share it.

This is not our problem, there is no law, only strength matters. Subcontinent is united in seeking distance from the western narrative. We need to keep out of this.

Human right and pro life warriors only interested in saving Whites life, BD poor are only worth if you vote and serve them. Shameful people shameful behaviours.

Ruthless pursuing of national interest can not supersede fairness, justice and international norms and laws codified by UN. If national interest is the only criteria for every country in this world to engage in international politics then this world will become a jungle, because every country's national interest will clash with other's. Germany again will find gobbling up Poland as the most important national Interest! every European country has some territorial grievance against their neighbor. Where this will end? India has national interest of seizing some part of Bangladesh which will ease their connectivity with their North East. Should India be allowed to pursue this ''national Interest''? India is in position to do so, Bangladesh on it's own can not successfully resist that. What will be the condition of our 'national interest' then?

Given the amount of sanctions Russia is getting, Roopur is going to nowhere. Russia will not be able to finance all those billions. They themselves will need those billions. moreover, Bangladesh might get sanctioned if it continue to deal with Rosatom.

You worry about Russia halting Ruppor if we displease them, yet do not bother about displeasing the West which is the destination of 80 percent of our export. This indicate that, you sub-consciously hold the West at higher regards than Russia. A more rational, caring actor, isn't it? This is why we need a world led by liberal, democratic orders instead of powerful autocratic despots trying to replace it.

Do not agree with you in any of your points. Already been discussed in other threads so wont bother making the same points here.

Will reiterate only two points.....interest of BD is the only and sole priority....does not matter one bit if the russians liquidate Ukraine to the last man women or child.
Secondly, BD is on its own, no one will come to our assistance whether against india or anyone else....we can offcourse pretend otherwise.
